I see that CZP sells the OEM rear main seal without the retainer housing. Doesn't this mean that I can replace the rear main seal once I remove the flywheel without having to pull the upper oil pan off of the block, since I am pulling the old and reinserting the new seal into the original housing?

 

There has to be someone that knows this answer. I have seen several threads with people stating they have done this, but even more threads with people saying that this procedure is impossible/an incomplete job.

This is my first thread on this forum and I find it depressing and difficult to believe that people don't have experience in changing the rear main seal on a VQ35DE. I wanted to hear other people's answers before I tear into this and try to rip the rear main seal out from the retainer plate. I've done this on other vehicles without issue, but Google and this forum provide conflicting knowledge on how to properly replace this seal.

 

The service manual says to replace the whole plate not just the seal since that is the only way that is sold by Nissan.

 

However, since the seal is sold separately, I can change the seal without removing the plate?

 

Does anyone on this whole forum know whether or not I am set if I purchase the seal by itself for replacing the rear main? I need to get this done and I don't want to touch it if I am to remove the upper oil pan.

I'm wondering the same thing about my ride. What did you end up doing?

 

I've stripped my engine and stated a rebuild.
THe retainer is immaculate and seems a waste to bin it. I don't see why I can't just fit a new seal.
Anyone think otherwise? :-)
