Default Marbles in a Can....

Guys Im hearing a bunch of marbles rattling around when i hit the gas but it only happens briefly and then by 20mph it disappears. only at low rpms too.

Sounds like my old car when i used to try to run 87 octane in it but im running 93 octane here in Atlanta.

Car is a 2006 Revup, 66000k miles.

Why the hell is it Pinging or is my assumption right? Pinging .. ?

probably something loose in your exhaust system, or a blown catalytic convertor.

Used to run 87? For how long did you do this?? lol

Sounds like detonation for sure, have you pulled your plugs and inspected them?

Does it sound more like a few BBs in a can as opposed to marbles? Does it kinda sound like plastic bags kinda crumpling?

Considering it goes away after a certain RPM or MPH, it does sound like detonation.

Going by speed is not a good way to tell if it's detonation. You need to see what RPM you are at and try it in various gears. Maybe you could take a video? Granted, microphone might not pick up the noise. If you have access to a jack and all that, maybe get under the car and hit the exhaust with a rubber mallet. Check all heat shields (including exhaust manifolds), strut tower brace, etc.

If you can't find anything rattling, there is one controversial thing you can try, and do it at your own risk. You could put in a gallon or two of e85 on your next fill-up and see if the noise persists. e85 has extreme detonation resistance. The small risk is, it will make you run a tiny bit lean because it takes 30% more e85 to make the same energy as gas. 1 or 2 gallons of e85 isn't going to hurt your car unless you're already tuned for running leaner than stock. If not, you won't have any problems. 2 gallons out of 14 is not very significant.

couldnt it just be clutch chatter with a higher gear selected at low speed low rpm?

Default its like BB's in a can...

Ill change my assumption to BB's sound happens only in low RPM's when i gas it real quick. Its just for two seconds but clears up as soon as the rpms climb above 3K.
Ive always ran 93 on the z33. Clutch is fine as ive replaced several clutches in the past on the z32. I even tried different 93 octanes from different gas stations and the same result.

Changed my plugs a week prior to LFR6A-11's because they are one step colder. I did this as a precaution to what i was hearing .

I had a TTZ so was very familiar with detonation. This is the sound of ' Knock' or Pinging.

The oil level is midway up the dipstick and does burn a **** load of oil but why is it burning oil? The damn car has 60K miles on it.

Do you have a lightweight flywheel?

Oh my God. People are still asking about clutch chatter or transmission parts.

OP, question: Have you installed any air intake-related mods. What about exhaust mods?

When I was all-motor, I installed Nismo cold air intake. It was so stupid because the manual never said to remove the air ducts that were factory installed which were designed to bring air up to the stock air box. When the weather was warm, the car would detonate at higher RPMs cuz the area where the filter was located was surrounded and there was no air flow.

It does sound like detonation especially if it sounds like you have 1-2 BBs in a can and you kinda shake it a little. Lemme know if you have any air/exhaust mods.

Because this: "Ill change my assumption to BB's sound happens only in low RPM's when i gas it real quick. Have you ever driven a G or a Z with a lightweight fly? Perhaps his stock dual mass unit is getting tired and is not doing such a great job dampening anymore. I know mine doesn't dampen out the gear rattle as much as it used to, so sometimes I hear the "marbles in a can" very faintly when I lug the engine at ~1500-2000 rpm.

Also if you can hear audible detonation, you probably already have done damage to the engine. Not to mention if the stock ecu hears detonation (well before you can) it will switch to the low timing map to prevent it.

Might also have to dowith load. Depending on the fuel/timing maps andother related mods, sometimes detonation might only happen under certain load/rpm.

My Sentra had its timing advancedmany years ago. Lately I've noticed at a certain RPM, I am hearing pining but onceit goes higher, it stops.

I also asked if the sound was more accurately described as 'BBs in a can' instead of marbles. He said it sounds like BBs. It could be anything I guess but my guess is pinging.
