Well, the motor failed on me this morning. Had just gotten on the interstate, my oil and battery light came on with the engine light flashing, started knocking louder than normal, oil pressure dropped off and it died immediately. Looks like its time for a new motor. It needed one anyways so I'm not completely distraught...
Sell your VQ, and swap an LS series, funds permitting

I'd run the following tests:
1. Compression test
2. Compression leak down test
3. Vacuum test
4. Pull the valve covers off and inspect everything. Check for play. Check your cams for wear. How dirty is it in there? Replace your valve cover gaskets and put it back together.
5. Your timing chain might be stretched. If you can get to it, check for play.
6. Do a cooling system pressure test and check the coolant for hydrocarbons
The only quick and dirty remedy I'd try is Seafoam. Some people report that ticking/knocking is mitigated or eliminated using that product.
Other than that, like the others said, at almost 200K miles, your engine's a bit of a geezer.

She deserves a new motor so I'm currently shopping for a low-mile vq. How much do you all think I would be able to get out of my old one? Took a video before the car was towed off for motor to be pulled. Sounds great cold when oil pressure is up but once warm it gets pretty noisy. It is about halfway warmed up in this video.

Also one other question if I may. I've found a vq35de out of an automatic g35 sedan. Will that drop right in my six speed z or do I need to find one that's been mounted to a six speed?
