Default A/C advice - Bad compressor?

My A/C has worked great since I got the car, but a few days ago it started blowing warm air. This was an abrupt change. Not something that slowly developed over time.

Based on my research, this is what I've done:
  • I checked my pressure which was about 110psi on the low side (larger pipe). This was done with the air set to max fan/max cool.
I know this is VERY high, but no changes or repairs have ever been made to the HVAC system on this car so I don't know why it's so high.
  • I checked the 10 amp A/C fuse. It tested out good with a continuity meter.
  • I tested the A/C relay. In addition to an audible clicking in and out, I was able to very the circuit opening and closing with a continuity meter.
  • Both of my belts are in good shape.
  • There is no SES light or error code.
  • When I switch the A/C from off to anything greater than off there is a slight dimming of lights that lasts for about 1 second as would be expected when bringing the A/C on.

I'm truly stumped. I haven't hit any potholes or sustained any damage to the car. It must be something with the compressor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is a 2003 base model with no mods of any sort.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what you mean by re-gassing. Is that a procedure I could do myself?

He is referring to recharging the system…you can do it yourself, they make kits you can buy at most autoparts stores…

with the diagnostics you've done thus far, you've given me the confidence that you could re-charge it yourself…my advice would be to read and understand the directions well, wear eye protection, full sleeved shirt and gloves when you do the work.

IF…you are looking to replace your compressor, I have one off my 03 touring ~50k miles on it that I could sell you if you wanted to go down that road…PM me if you're interested.

Oh. Gotcha. That's actually the first thing I did. I bought a recharge kit. But when I attached it to recharge the system, the gauge was showing 110psi which was way above the "green" zone so I didn't add any more.

Next I'll check the low pressure switch. Maybe that's the problem. I really don't want to replace the compressor until I check all the electrical stuff first, but if it comes to that I'll be in contact with you. Thanks for the help guys. If there's any more suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Any update? I have almost the same exact problem (high pressure on low/large side). However, I know that the system has been worked on; it was taken apart to replace the front rad support after a front-end collision.

I was going though AC Belts every 2 months for about 6 months. So i decided to get deeper look into what the hell was going on because it didnt feel right.

So one day since driving and nothing but warm air coming out.

I took a look and the AC Compressor was locked up.

Luckily the extended warranty covered it the $1200 bill.
I only had to pay $100 deductible.
