Default Maintaining Auto Trans how?

If I want to make my automatic transmission last what other things can I do other than do oil change from time to time? Sometimes I do floor it to play with others... I always afraid I hurt the trans if I do it too many times....

An oil change doesn't directly affect the transmission.
Engine oil = Engine.
Transmission fluid = Transmission.

Get a transmission cooler, heat is a killer.

Is the stock tranny cooler (through radiator) not sufficient for daily street use?

i think you can relax. nissan spent a lot on r&d on what they say is one of the finest auto trannys.

the tranny is built to handle the full power of the engine. keep your trans fluid changed at normal or sooner than normal if you drive hard often. racing usually warrants upgrades.

Ahahaha... I think stock tranny cooler is alright but I was thinking if I upgrade it to a bigger one will it make my tranny last longer or if I floor it more will it be better with an upgrade one? I don't drive crazy alot just thinking if it is good?

Ahaha Ok thanks. I do change the trans fluid every 8,000km (not miles) is it good enough? I know it use the Nissan J type fluid it is a bit more expensive. Also is this the right trans oil cooler from greddy I can install for my Z? It said it is 10 columns (300MM X 140MM X 50MM) is it good?

You can use that, it's fine. If you ask me, your car doesn't even need that unless you go to the track. Just do regular oil change, you're fine. It is the continuous gear shifting that heats up your transmission, not when you "floor it". For this, an oilcooler is a good upgrade.

If the tranny lasts long enough on the heavy A/T Nissan Patrol / Armada / Titan, etc, then imagine how comfortable it is with the Z which is way lighter.

Whatever Nissan puts on the car is meant for that car as is: stock. Once you begin changing things around, supporting mods need to be taken into consideration. With that being said, Stillen, B&M, Mishimoto and Greddy all make several transmission coolers. Overheating is one of the main causes of automatic transmission failure - no harm in looking into an aftermarket one.

On the topic of fluids, J-Matic has been replaced by S-Matic.

Unless you're tracking your car, 8K is actually TOO often for ATF changes. You want your fluid to have SOME friction material in it. If you drive normally with the occasional spirited driving, then just stick with the factory recommended maintenance schedule.

BTW: The transmission cooler is a VERY NICE accessory. Just be sure to take it off when you sell the car or you'll never get anything back from that investment.

That picture appears to be an engine oil cooler, and not sure if it's even a real Greddy.

Pretty similar - the caption on the photo you posted says engine oil cooler.

While we're on the topic of maintaining the auto transmission, how accurate is the dip stick?
Also, what is the proper way on reading the dipstick?

I had a shop do a drain and fill on my auto transmission..they didn't measure the amount taken out,and instead refilled and used the dipstick to measure how much to was in there.

Second post. From what I've read it's quite a complicated process.

Thanks, it sounds like the best thing to do is to bring it to the dealership?

I would take it to a performance shop that knows what they're doing in the area, or a reputable transmission shop. Reason being that I've read stories where the dealer has sold the wrong type of fluid to an Automatic owner (e.g. manual fluid or D-Matic), and in any case dealerships are usually overpriced and provide horrible service.

I would look for shops that provide UpRev tunes (they have a map UpRev.com), reason being that assuming since they tune using UpRev, they are familiar with the Nissan platform. Pretty simple to find shops, then google around to see their feedback.
