Head case disassembly-this car has mede me a head case HELP!
The mounting point for the cam sensor came broken off. I was told it was just missing but the part it attaches to is broken.
"Luckily" it is not part of the head and can be purchased separately.
I looked at the service manual and it is not mentioned on it's own. Can I get it out without completely disassembling the timing system?

Wouldn't recommend it. 2 of the cam journals are in there. Your supposed to tighten them evenly so you don't bend the cam. It "MAY" be possible without anything happening to the cam, but I wouldn't chance it.
But yes you can do it.

Actually a light bulb went off, maybe you can get away with taking the tension off the chain and loosening all the cam caps. Then remove the broken back plate and replace it. Then you dont have to remove the chain and might be a quicker fix.
If a shop did this their not going to replace your entire motor from this, good luck convincing them to.

It is a junk yard motor I bought to replace my freaking $12k stroker that is throwing a bearing.

They listed the broken intake cover & valve cover and missing actuator but said the motor was otherwise fully functional and that it just needed those parts replaced/installed.
I went to install my actuator and found the broken off bolt in the middle mount and broken upper & lower mounts.

Well, unfortunately you will have to remove the front timing cover to replace that cam tower. The cam tower bolts onto the timing cover as you can see the threaded holes on the part that faces to the front of the motor. You might be able to get away with removing the bolts without removing the cam sprockets so you don't mess with the cam timing, but not too sure, you would have to see when you're in there. Sorry to bring the bad news, but that's what you have to do to replace those caps.
Front timing cover is a given. I can do that. I don't want to mess with the timing. That requires ability beyond my comfort zone.
I am waiting for them to open tomorrow. Hopefully they respond early to my email.
If not I'll call and force the issue. I hope I don't have to go through eBay. I hate eBay.
Thanks

Honestly with the motor out of the car like that, aligning the timing is super simple. I understand your afraid because you've heard horror stories involving bent valves. The worst thing about doing any timing job in a car is accessing the damn thing.
If you do have to go that route, get the fsm and necessary tools and you'll be fine.

I have the FSM and a full garage. I am doing the R&R on the motor now. I bought the damn complete motor specifically to be able to just drop the f0kker in.
They said they run & compression test every motor. Is it safe to assume missing that actuator that leads into the head oil would have been shooting out if it was started?
Anyone know what book time on this job is? I'll be asking to be paid if I end up doing it.

Fooking seller made me call them, then said they will look into a solution and call (2 hours ago) I called and shock VM. and it is full.
I sent a message saying I need a solution by 9am PST or will need a refund and for them to pick up their pos.

I celled back, and they were saying look at the pictures, you can see it. I said sure, now that I know it is there I can see it. You did not have in the description there is damage to the case of the engine and that anything but the valve cover, intake cover and the missing sensor needed attention. This requires that the entire timing mechanism be r&r'd.
We went around & around and finally they agreed to refund 200.00. I found the part from Slidegood for 22 and have started disassembling the timing cover. If I can I'll do it. If not I'll drag it to the mechanic and have him do it.
