Default Wierd grinding noise on startup

hey guys,

half the time i start my 2003 z it makes a grinding noise as soon as i turn the key.. i read some stuff online suggesting it might be the teeth of the flywheel not lining up with the starter or something like that.. does anyone know how i can fix it? its pretty embarrassing lol

Post a video if you can. It might be your timing chain tensioner.

The 350z is always making some weird noises especially from the transmission. But that definitely sounds like an issue with the starter. I had the same problem with my mom's car and when the starter was replaced the sound was gone. You or the last owner must have turned the key when the engine was already running more than once because that's how the starter on our car went bad and started making those noises everytime it started up.

If the noise starts as soon as you turn the key and before the engine fires, it's most likely something with the starter and ring gear on the flywheel.

If the noise starts when the engine fires and lasts for just a few seconds, it's more likely the chain tensioner. This noise goes away when the oil pressure comes up, and it probably won't come back until the engine has a chance to cool off and sit for a while.

That's the starter bro, i have no clue how much labor will cost as I am no mechanic but if these parts like everything else on the Z is consistent, you better have deep pockets. I see starters for as much as 300 American bones. You can get some for cheaper by looking around obviously.
