Default Engine stalling...

Hey guys,

Got an '03 base model with 120k miles. Got some basic bolt ons (Injen CAI, Injen exhaust, Walbro 255, Kinetix plenum, and a couple others).

Anyways, I've been experiencing an issue with my motor stalling out. The situation is this. When decelerating at any speed, I'll go to into neutral, just coasting to a stop. When my RPMs drop, they surpass the normal idle and the motor will stall out. I've been battling this issue for a bit now. Replaced spark plugs, threw in a Walbro 255, cleaned the MAF... anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions? Much thanks!

Possible crankshaft pos sensor. Throwing a CES intermittently or anything? Also, have you checked your oil level? If it's severely low, this might be another area to watch frequently. For an '03 with that mileage, expect serious maintenance soon if you've beat on the car hard a lot.

My car started doing exactly this before piston rings totally gave up. Get a compression test/ leak down test if you're burning lots of oil. Is your oil smoking hot in the valve cover where you add oil?

Camshaft pos sensors are a common problem too, but as he describes his situation doesn't sound the same. Camshaft pos sensors will be more like "car idling fine, then stalls randomly in neutral or with clutch in" and "car stalls in gear, but immediately kicks back over from being in gear resulting in vdc/slip/ces lights coming on."

Hopefully your engine isn't seizing from low oil/wear.

Ya I do realize I will be undergoing some maintenance here shortly, but like mcarther101 said, it doesn't stall out at idle. If I'm parked and in neutral and rev it up, when the rpms drop its like the motor just falls right on its face and chokes up. Could this be any issue with the throttle body?

Try resetting the Idle Air Control Valve. My car was stalling when I'd drop to neutral getting off the highway, RPMs would drop and stall out. I did the reset method found on the forum here and no issues since.

Did you try resetting your ECU after installing said parts? Or did this just randomly start happening awhile after the installation of these parts?

Do you notice any new "bad" sounds?

Same thing was going on with my car. Had the crankshaft position sensor replaced (in addition to a bunch of others), though no luck. In my case it turned out to be a bad tensioner, which only started making noise a hundred miles after symptoms appeared. Maybe try having someone listen to the engine while you rev in neutral? For me it became audible at 4.5k
