Exclamation Cold morning My Gears grinded in reverse and in second!!

Hi guys, this morning I warmed up my car and while reversing, the gears grind-ed and then shifting into second gear they grind-ed again as well. i just f******** bought this car 3 days ago and while test driving it, it was fine. Am i going to need a new transmission? what is this? is it a common problem for 03 350z's im worried!! BUT after driving it around for a bit the gears were fine, No grinding i don't know, some body please fill me in here

Thanks

Warming your car up does not warm up gear oil. You had cold tranny fluid, and when it warms up, you were fine.

Didn't it throw up a red flag when you had to hyphenate it that you were doing it wrong?

When it's cold, try taking it easy when shifting until the transmission oil warms up.

These transmissions do not like the cold.

When you bought the car didn't the guy you bought it off give you the winter coat for the gearbox?
I'd ring the previous owner and see if he's still got it, it could save you a couple of hundred bucks.

OP, I see similar issue with my vehicle, but as others mentioned it goes away as vehicle warms up. No big deal, just don't push it to hard when you first get the car going.

I drive my car 365 days a year in central Ohio, have 138,000 miles on it, and the original clutch and tranny. I don't have any grinding whatsoever, at any temp - it is a bit stiff shifting when really cold, like below 30. Clutch and tranny problems will be magnified by the cold - mileage on the '03? Original clutch? Assume original tranny.....

Not saying that every Z's tranny grinds when fluid is cold, but if it's grinding only when cold, and goes away when warmed up, then logically the OP should just take it easy until it warms up, unless he wants to go nuts and shorten the lifespan of his tranny.

for any m/t car that i've owned, i've always put the car in a "forward" gear first prior to putting it in reverse. never grinds.

There is no synchromesh when going into reverse, so a quick shift into reverse can result in a grind unless the “stars are aligned.” So… This is normal… No problem here.

The grind when going into second gear is a concern, and that is especially the case considering the fact that the 2003 350z’s transmission is notorious for synchromesh problems. Hot or cold should not make any difference. The transmission should not grind.

I agree putting it in 1st or second then reverse will lessen the chance for grind in reverse.

However grinding in second is an issue. This most likely means your synchros are worn. I have this issue with my beater car. It does the same and I'm sure the gear will go at some point. but i will drive it until then.
