Welcome to the Board,

Some early Z's have tranny issues. Tons of threads on it.
Do a search and get ready to read a lot.

if they had to fix the same problem 3 times I think your entiled to
act on the Lemon Law. Not sure though.

i have an 03 track too. i had a problem with 3rd gear. they replaced it, and all is well (for now)

if you've had 3 replacements already, i'd say file under the lemon law.

i'm currently on my 3rd transmission, and it seems all good for now.
i was talking to the service rep that did the work on my car. nissan is now in the 4th generation of z transmissions (z33 that is, not older ones), trying to correct a design problem (do a search for "grinding" on this board). 4 in under 2 years is a sign of a serious issue. anyway, my 2nd 4th gen is doing well (first one had some issues), and the car feels great. if this one goes bad and i have to get more work done, i'm seriously going to start talking buyback / lemon law.

myk,
what is the build date and vin for your car. I have an '03 Touring 6M with vin #137 and a build date of Aug '02. What was the mileage when your tranny started to grind? So far, at 9900 miles no tranny problems. (knock on wood).

My tranny doesn't grind, but when I go in 5th gear from 6th or 4th when it's cold it clanks really bad. You knw how each shift there is a small amount of resistance when you change it from gear to gear? Well when I go from 4th to 5th, or 6th to 5th, there's no resistance...it's just goes CLANK. I brought it to Nissan and conveniently they didn't reproduce the problem.

My did the same thing what you need to do is to leave it at the dealer so they can drive it when its cold also tell them to drive it on a short drive i notice if you drive it longer it warms up sooner and the problem disappears.

I was at Performance Nissan yesterday morning. Angel, the tech from Nissan came and drove my car. I left the car at Performance Nissan wedsday night so on thursday, I can drive the car first thing in the morning with Angel(Nissan Tech) to show him the grind & knochiness. Luckly, Angel did notice the little grind or a mechanical noise & the knochiness as he was driving my car.

NOW I KNOW I AM NOT CRAZY .

Angel wrote down my Vin number and he said he is going to check with Nissan Engineers. He said that he will be at Nissan next wed. so he will have an answer by friday.

He also said that there are 7 cars that Nissan has that they are testing for different things.

As of last wedsday, I got a call back from NNA. They told me that all the issues I am having is normal for the Z. They also said thats how the Z's were made. I can't belive they said that. When Angel Drove my car, he knew that there was something wrong. I am soo dam fraustrated. I also drove 3 other Z's yesterday and their tranny is nothing like mine. they all shifted firm. One had little knochiness but it was very minor. Mine on the other had is very rough & loose. The NNA says that there is nothing they can do any more. This is ridiculous. I think they are full of ****. I even told NNA that I would bring my friends cars to show them the difference but they declined. They said that sending a tech out is the last thing they do.

I have driven sticks for over 10 years, actually, 20 years and I have never had a tranny that shifted like my car. I also test drove 3 of my friends cars who are forum member and their cars are nothing like mine. I know every car drives little different but they have basic commonality. I also had one my friend drive my car who was an auto mechanic at one time and even he noticed that my car shift very rough and that something is not dis-engaging all the way for my car shift smooth. At the same time when the clutch is pressed all the way and you shift 3rd to 4th back in forth, my tranny jumps and made clunck noise. We also tried it with his car, just made mechanical noise but it did not jump like mine.

As far as they saying about nothing else can be done thats bull they know that they are seeing if you fall for that... If I have to be a 4th tranny in Iam going to blow up ha I may go and see about the lemon law route. will post outcome

I have build 17,000 or something 'round there. I have the problem. I am scheduled to get the newest tranny Monday. (if the weather holds out). I have less than 2800 miles on her in the just over 5 months I've had her, mostly city, but ~1000 is long highway cruise (i.e. no shifting).
