My problem is I am having a slow oil leak from my passenger side VVT Solenoid. I have replaced the gasket with a new one and is still leaking. I did see that after I took off the VVT Solenoid to put the new gasket on. That there was a little indented groove on the side of the flat surface of the engine that the VVT Solenoid lays on top of. My question is what do you think I can use to fill in that indentation to stop the oil leak?

 

I personally use stuff called honda bond . It never let me down

 

Do you think it would be ok to use just a little black RTV just in that area?

 

Yea as long as it's oil resistant which I think it is . I would clean the area extremely well as best I could first then apply a nice bead

 

Tried the black RTV and I let it sit for a 1/2 hour before turning the engine over. When I did start the engine it held for about 45 seconds and started to slowly leak out oil again. Here is a photo of whAt I'm dealing with. I have cleaned the surface off again. Let me know if anybody has any ideas of what I can do.

go to a honda dealer ship and get honda bond. it is great stuff. oil, chemical coolant resistant. I use it for most of my engines, or three bond 1211...

generic RTV's are crud... get some good stuff. hondabond runs about 14$ A TUBE.

 

He is right about the honda bond but the rtv should work for that area . Where are you located what's the temp like that your allowing it to dry ? I'd re do it not put too much and let it sit and stop trying to turn the car over atleast a few hours man . Try and take pics if you can upload them to photo bucket and copy the IMG (image link) and past .

There's the photobucket link. You can see the little indented grooves on the left where the oil is slowing leaking out. And I'm in Indianapolis and the temp is around 25* degrees but I have the car in my garage and am working on it in there. Now the temp in the garage might be around 35-45* degrees. Thank you for all your help, I really appreciate it.

 

Aright so basically if after letting it sit for 2-3 hours and it's not working I would just go to the nissan dealer and get the oem gasket it calls for . I think it's like 5 bucks and look up the required torque spec for it or just ask at nissan parts. I personally wouldn't use the rtv as a permanent fix although it might hold up, in your case it isn't .

 

I've already purchased a new gasket from nissan for it. And it is not holding the oil in because of the little indentation on the third oil hole on the left. If you zoom in you can see it not the ones on the bottom left go up. The oil slowly leaks out at about a drip every second. I just don't know how to stop it from leaking?

 

Wait I never had to replace so j don't know how or why tha is there ? Also maybe clean it real well , put a tiny bead in the indentation , let it fully cure by it self before putting the gasket and vct solinoid back in and torque to spec .

Also if you want more reassurance I would go to honda and get honda bond , it works way better then any gasket .

 

Ok I cleaned the vvt solenoid and beaded on some of the black RTV and let it sit for about 4 hours before I tightened it down. I did not start the engine for almost 24 hours. But when I did, it is not leaking and the Black RTV is holding its seal. Going to try and take it for a drive later this evening, going to keep my fingers crossed.
