I'm pretty sure you are beginning to burn some oil through either the valves or the rings. You might get your car to a mechanic to perform a leak down test. I would also recommend checking your oil before driving tomorrow.

You're burning oil. You need to check compression. --Spike

Will the leak down test determine if its valve or rings? Thanx

Like other said, you're burning oil. Check the levels before you run it again.

If your valves are bad (burnt or the shaft is warped), you will likely hear some noise (usually a ticking sound).

If you are burning oil in the cylinders, you see some blue smoke from the exhaust.

If you see a white exhaust, your head gasket is leaking and probably because coolant is leaking into the engine and is burned inside the cylinders.

Does it smell like it's burning oil? Are you losing coolant? Or losing oil?

Is there a rodent nest anywhere?......JK

If it's blue smoke, I highly doubt he's losing coolant.

These threads always scare me! I get a little of white smoke in the morning when it's cold. I know it's just moisture ( I've checked coolant and have done a compression test and checked my oil..well I change it but I check the dipstick every couple hundred miles) I always have a mini freak out when reading this.

Maybe he's color blind.
First thing to do is confirm which fluid is being lost. If the coolant level doesn't change, one can be extra sure it's oil.....which also has a very distinct odor.

Fair enough. It doesn't hurt being extra sure.

I'm still betting it's oil though.

Most head gasket issues involve a slight misfire.

^^ I agree with you. And, I would think that compression would be compromised if his car is burning oil, but he said his compression checks out.

What do you think he might be looking at for repairs (and cost which is probably his main concern)?
