I believe you have the 'valet' key and not an owners key...talk to nissan / prepare to open your wallet...

If dealer tries to charge you too much just ask them for your keycode which parts department can look up, you need to show them proof of ownership, and take it to locksmith to be cut by code.

It’s dead easy to convert your valet key into a ‘full service’ key. If you compare your valet key to somebody else’s main key, you will see that the valet key has a little bump that keeps it from opening the glove box. Simply file down this little bump to convert it into a full service key.

You can order a ‘chipped’ key blank from ebay and have the dealer cut the key and program the chip to your car. Far less money a large locksmith shop can also do this for you.

The valet key is a dark maroon. The normal keys are black so I suspect you have the regular key. It is possible someone could have changed the glovebox door for a new one and never changed the lock.

On my 04 roadster the valet key was the same black as the regular keys.

Maybe the valet keys changed from year to year. Here is a picture of my valet key from 2003. The color in the picture isn't very good, but you can see is is maroon. It also doesn't have anything to file down to make it usable for the glove box.

I think you also have the valet key..

My Z didn't come with one but have Nissan dealer confirm it.
