Default Steering wheel wont turn in low rpms

First, it started off only when i was reversing it was VERY difficult to turn the wheel either way. Now, it doesnt matter im going or forward, if my car is hot or cold it wont turn unless i rev my engine over 2.5k(maybe even higher). If my car is idling or low rpms it is near impossible to turn or if im in neutral it i cant really make a turn, i have to keep it in gear. I have added power steering fluid to it, but that didnt seem to help at all. Any ideas of what it could be before i take it to a mechanic? Thanks!

If you're adding power steering fluid to the PS resevoir, there's likely a leak. Have you jacked up the car and inspected the fittings on the steering rack? Even looking at where the pattern of leaks are, might tell you whether it's the rack or PS pump that's failing.

So right after you added power steering did it get easier to turn? If not, then it may not be a leak.. Only thinking logically here...

aren't these cars electronic assisted steering? maybe low battery or pump/motor going bad? (not a mechanic, so don't quote me on this stuff... lol)

If you can't even inspect your car, why bother asking? It's not like you're going to be able to do anything about it.

If I were you, I would just take your car to a mechanic and ask him to fix it.

I doubt that you will get an answer. This post is almost 7 years old.

The post is old and the OP hasn't logged in for almost four years. But the advice remains the same: jack the Z up and check the steering rack for leakage or damage. This may also show up as an ECM code if the leak registers on a sensor.

Given that the steering “frees up” with higher revs, would suspect a pump/hydraulic issue as indicated by previous posts; that is, the pump is being underdriven and/or there’s inadequate fluid pressure to the rack.

First check belt tension (and associated tensioners). A bad or slipping belt can completely undo the steering altogether.

Next, check fluid level and top as needed. If you have to add, that's a telltale. It’s a closed system so if it requires fluid, it’s being lost somewhere. Check pump, rack assembly, and connections/hoses for evidence of leakage. You likely will not see “ground evidence” (drips) because most power steering leaks occur while car is running (pressuring the fluid) but evidence of leakage will remain on components.

If nothing turns up after all of that, remaining suspect is the steering rack itself.

Here’s something to try at this point. With the front wheels unloaded (jack stands or on lift or otherwise secure way of getting front wheels off ground), have someone turn the wheel lock to lock - is both directions - while you listen underneath. There should be no undue clicking or grinding from the now unloaded rack. If there is and/or the steering is still tight/sticky, likely the rack is worn or otherwise out of spec.

Remedy: replace the rack assembly (or have it rebuilt.)

Good luck.
