Passenger seat belt locked up HELP!
Before i begin i "have" been serching the net all day, and have found nothing.... I guess I'm the only one on earth this has happened to.
05 Roadster: quick background
Had the car for 3 months 74k on it
No issues
Possibly connected:
Got a deck put in and a week later weird things started happening.
Early morning or dusk after turning on the headlights but never before diving a few yards, I get the tone you get when you go to get out of the car after parking and leaving the lights on.
Current issue:
Gave my girl the keys to run an errand, minutes later she calls me from the driveway to tell me the passanger side belt won't come out to fasten.
Minor details:
It was a hot day, the car was on, and she had put the top down, and hadn't pulled away yet.
I'm starting to have second thoughts... I thought I left bucket world behind once I got a Z...
Help

Kinda like how in a GM vehicle if you pull the seat belt out too quickly it will catch, then you have to back up and inch and pull it slower. Or if you pull the belt all the way out it will lock until you roll it all the way up.
The bad part is the latch/roll is in the side wall and you have to take a few panels out to get to it to check it out.
As for the light buzzer, do your dome lights stay on like if you had the door open and do both of your windows auto index when you open/close them?
The belt is locked tight with 0 play. I'm SOOO not ready to pull pannals, I can never pull pannals without popping off or breaking a pin causing a rattle or squeak... I thought those days were over... Urgh!
How annoying.
The Z is actually wonderful in regards to removing the interior. I've had mine out a few times and have only broken 1 clip and that was under the dash on the passenger side.
I'm betting it has something to do with the radio install. They did something to the car to make it unhappy. Was it just a radio or did they install amps and speakers too?

Iv been trying to think what could have been crossed on a head unit to interfere with "seat belts"... But I got nothing

I have no idea either. Installing a head unit is very simple.
It's just strange how someone was messing in the dash and now you have electrical issues.
I tend to always think the worst when it is something easy so don't take this as the guaranteed fault but they may have somehow shorted the BCM.

So I toolk advice from some form I found for a Nissan altlima saying it was a fix for several vehicles including 350z
To unbolt the belt anchor to give it play and let if fully retact and then it should reset the tensioner
.....
Nope. This is as far as it got... Why is my font so big all of a sudden???
Still on the search for a reason or fix it.
I removed the entire rear console ( you have to to get the seat belt out)
Removed the seat belt......
And here I am.................
This is the bs I'm finding:
To test your seat belt : shake it, if it rattles is bad
Voltage test it: if it reads more, less, or fluctuates around 2.3 its bad....."
And If it doesn't do any of that stuff, then what???...
This is a nightmare

I don't know about testing it but I would check to see if you can roll it up any, if something is stuck in it, if you can access or see the locking gear on it etc...
Does anything on it look or smell burnt?

Regards, Riff: Nissan warranties the seatbelt in your 2005 Z for ten years from the date first placed in service, some vehicles come with a lifetime guarantee. Check your manual or with the dealership for confirmation.
I was so angry last night about the possibility of not being able t take a passenger for however long that i gave up and went in to the dealer after work today to get the official price of a new one.
they then informed me of my warranty and that i still had a year left.
(heavens)so i'm here right now getting "both" replaced
so i guess that is why i hadn't found anything online about locked up seat belts.
but still... i mean not to look good fortune in the palm, but i still wanna know why it happened to begin with.
i suppose they will tell me wen its done. i was hoping to be the first victim with a answer and solution to something new lol.
thanks for the suggestions and input... if i hadn't wondered in here on my own that definitely would have guided me in the direction of getting it fixed.
no, everything looked "normal" to me... but not having dealt with this style of seat belt before, thats probably not saying much.
I was going to ask you to ask them what causes it. I'm curious to know and having the info here might help someone in the future that doesn't have warranty.
Well, not much of a diagnosis...
They just said " I there a code that triggered the lock up"
I never saw a code light before removing the belt, but that all they came up with.
He said its not common and they he had only seen it before with a armada a altima and another car I can't remember the name of.
So yea... My gross assumption is that "they don't know what happened either"
I really couldn't give a honest guess as to what I think it was other then the heat that day... It was 104.... But I'm sure it has been that hot before..
But if I had to guess "something", I'd say a surge of some sort with the head unit....
But I'm not 100% at all

Regards, Riff: Good to hear this. 92K1500 asked a good question about "burnt smell". I believe your '05 has an explosive retractor that tensions the seatbelt when triggered. If this was initiated during your audio install then Nissan NA may decline the replacement under warranty. Happily it sounds like they're going to replace them anyway. If not, the installer should then be liable for any damage your safety system. Either way you're good to go.
Saw your post yesterday, apologies for not having replied then & possibly saved you a day of frustration. Allow me to suggest that while the dealership has your Z, ask for a maintenance history? A good shop will give it an all-points inspection while they have it, 75K is a good time to think about preventive maint. items like fluids and belts.

My car has 115k miles and it gets up around 110 here. It's been MUCH hotter than that inside my car with the all black interior so I don't think heat caused it.
It has to be just a random conicidence or something that slipped through quality control. It's a man made part, anything can fail.

Yep they gave me a print out.
I looks like I'm the second owner, all maintenance looks up to date... My air filter needs to be changed and my wiper fluid is low.. Lol
But yea, no funny burnt smells to "me"... And they don't know the cause at all...
All and all, I guess the out come was good just wish I learned more from it
