i just purchased a 2005 350z touring. the horn doesnt work or the cruise control. the airbag light is constantly flashing. what might be the problem? thanks

my guess is that it was wrecked, and they replaced the steering wheel but didnt hook anything up

Bad clock spring.

Sub'd for clockspring info... Other month I took a hard right turn and air bag light has been flashing since. Horn doesn't work, and cruise control intermittently fails.

It's an easy fix. You'll need a security torx bit to get the airbag out (if I recall correctly). They're one-time use, so get new ones along with the new clock spring. Go with OEM on this one. I'm guessing there's a video how-to on YouTube since clock springs are a normal wear part.

That's interesting. I've been around these cars for a good 6 years now and haven't run into this.


Do you think the chances are good of that fixing both of our issues?

Also, I've remove the steering wheel on my g's and z's a bunch of times without replacing the security torx zinc chromate socket head cap screws. I haven't heard of them being one time use. Do you know why that is?

You'll probably be okay if you re-use the torx bolts as long as you use blue Loctite when you re-torque them to spec. Nissan recommends you replace them; probably since they don't want you messing with the airbags. New bolts are only a couple of bucks, if I recall correctly, so I just went with the manufacturer's recommendation.

I recently replaced the clock spring on my wife's 2009 Rogue since it was making a lot of noise. The same deal applies with the bolts on those.

If you're getting no horn, no cruise control, no stereo control from the steering wheel (if so equipped) and an airbag light, then yeah, the clock spring is the first thing I'd check.

You can do a continuity test on each wire if you want to make sure before you shell out the cash for a new one (always preferable to throwing parts at a problem.) That being said, based on the symptoms all bottlenecking to one point, it's good odds that it's a bad clock spring.

I've had clock springs go bad at 20K miles, 70K miles and at 110K miles on my personal cars, so I know that they're a bit of a weak link.
