Cooling Fans not working, Car overheating
I recently took my car out of storage its a 2005 Z where it sat for a few months, during that time the battery died and I needed to replace it all went well and I took the car out to go get an oil change and everything looked over after the oil change I was waiting in line for the car wash and the car began to over heat, I didn't let it reach the top temperature thank god. Anyway the mechanic saw the fans weren't turning on at all and suggested a new fan to be put in. Now Im not sure if this is what needs to be done or if it is something different like a blown fuse or maybe a short in the wiring somewhere. The other strange thing is the fact that today i turned the car on, tried to see if the fans would work (they did not) and when i turned the AC on it was blowing cold air but I had someone standing looking in on the fans and they still weren't turning. Any thoughts or Ideas anybody may have would be greatly appreciated. I literally can not afford this to happen right now and with the mechanic telling me it will be 400 to 500 dollars Im looking for any possible other reason this could of happened. Thanks again -Tim
I figure the likely culprit is a fuse or relay. I would check those first, since both fans should be on when a/c is engaged. Failing that, I'd test the connections on the fan harnesses to confirm they're getting power. 400-500 is a bit steep, I would just get used parts, I see the entire setup on ebay for like 100 bucks, so.
Never start throwing parts at something without doing research.
Begin by checking the fuse and relay as suggested by Jello. If the fuse looks good, replace it anyway. It's cheap and you may have a small void that it difficult to notice. Start the car, crank the AC, and see if you have power at both sides of your fuse. If you do, turn the car all the way off, unplug the connection at the fans, turn the car back on and crank the AC up once more. Check to ensure you have power at the vehicle-side of the connection. If you do, then the problem is going to be isolated to the fans. I do not believe the motors are serviceable, but as mentioned by Jello, you can find them for relatively cheap.

If you test the connection and find that you do not have power on the vehicle side, but have power on both sides of the fuse, then your problem lies between the fans and the fuse., If you find that you do not have power to either side of the fuse (after replacement) then you're problem is going to be somewhere between the battery and the fuse.

Thank you both for the reply, I just tested the fuses and with a fuse tester and they are both fine, I having trouble locating the relay however, is that mounted on the fans or is it also in the fuse box? Once I find it how am I supposed to test it also?
It's in the IPDM behind the battery, underneath the plastics. It looks like a large fuse, you'll be able to tell if it is popped and it will test bad with a tester. Check foot well on driver side as well, i don't recall there being a fuse in there, but it's worth checking anyways.

In addition to the items suggested above, the pg.pdf section of the Service Manual contains an IPDM Auto Active Test that will attempt to activate the fans (and other components) independent of any inputs from other systems. Sorry to revive a dead thread but I am having a similar issue to where my fans won’t turn on when the car is running. Checked fuses, relays, did the IPDM Active test, and everything seems normal. Even jumped the relay slot to see if the fans would turn on and they work.
any ideas?

how is it sad? they are in business to make money... why would they give the part to you at their cost?
I was an auto mechanic. Our job was to remove the defective part and install the new part. We were tasked with making parts. These mechanics aren't either. If I had a rack to put the car on, it would have been a 20-minute job, with an 80.00 part. You think that should cost $700.00?
