I have a friends 06 Z at my house, what started as a water pump replacement turned into pulling the front timing cover and chains etc. I cannot for the life of me get the cams back to where they should be. it jumped time when I was trying to move the slack on the main chain while trying to get the water pump out. I am by no means a professional but also I am not new to mechanical work but this has me beyond confused, I feel like I must be missing something somewhere. I have the FSM and it is proving to be no real help in resetting the cam timing. can anyone help me get this car running again. any tips would be appreciated, I can also post pictures later if that's any help in getting me going.
What specifically are you having trouble with? To turn the cams, bolt the cam gears on and use a 14mm socket on a ratchet to line the cams up. The spring pressure should hold them in the correct spot. Then, hold the cam gear while you remove the bolt with an impact gun. Remove the cam gears and then reassemble everything.
@ia8corba. I have the cam gears off, I can't seem to get the cams to "rest" anywhere. They are always pushing on a valve causing interference. When I had it all together the other day I had the intake cams set with the small holes up and the larger dowel pin holes down. I very slowly by hand, turned the crank pully about 25 degrees or so and I felt resistance, I obviously stopped and backed it off to what should be TDC. Again I must be missing something or doing something stupid and not seeing it... could I be on the exhaust stroke for #1? Again I can take more pictures if they help at all.
No, I didn't see anything about lining them up with marks on the rear cover. And when I was doing the waterpump it was at TDC but I did not confirm it was on the compression stroke as I was "just" changing the waterpump.

You need to find yourself a manual and read up before attempting to re-assemble. This is an interference engine. Mess it up and you'll be looking for a used engine.
