Default When I lift off the gas, a big whining sound can be heard

In no matter what gear I'm in, and I'm not going fast at all (at most would be going 50, however this problem happens at nearly all speeds below that), I hear what sounds like a huge whine coming from the transmission.

It just happens when I take my foot off the accelerator, and this noise wasn't there before (and if it indeed was there before, then it didn't sound anywhere near as loud as it does now).

It overpowers the stock stereo even at its '20' volume setting, and overpowers the tire roar as well. I drive an '04 6MT base model, and this noise just happened a couple of days ago (clocked in at 3700 miles).

Anyone know whats up?

Appreciate any and all feedback, this worries me and I'm just starting to fall in love with the Z.

its the rear end. i get it around 2500 - 3000 rpms and get it when accelerating and when decelerating. If i push in the clutch it is gone.

shop said, 'its ok, do not worry about it unless it gets worse....!'

if it's the rear end, i didn't think pushing in the clutch will effect it. the rear diff is linked to wheel rotation, so it's rotating no matter what engine rpm you're at. the clutch just disconnects the engine/trans from the driveshaft.
