it's a setting on your digital camera to take very upclose pictures of objects.

^^ more then likely it has a macro, normally represented by a flower icon. Every digital camera I have ever owned had one, even the very old ones.

If its a dSLR, then you have a macro mode to help aid, but you will need a external macro lens that screws into the normal lenes.

All macro modes on Point and shoots are not true macros and just allow you to get the sensor closer to the subject. They will not even get close to what you can get with a true 1:1 macro lens. Try getting the Carbon fiber shot I took, you can't even come close to that. In fact, I could have gotten even closer. It's mind blowing what pictures you can take with a true macro lens... which I'm just beginning to find out for myself.

A macro lens is a a true macro lens when it can focus down to 1:1 magnification. 1:1 on 35mm film will allow you to fit an object 35mm wide. APS-C cropped sensors on canon will allow you to fit a smaller size due to the sensor's smaller size.

Other "macro" lenses say "macro," but again, it's not really considered macro unless it can focus to 1:1 magnification.

^^ your speaking to the choir man Its my job to know these things. This is why I dont come in here often, everyone wants to preach.

I was trying to make it simple, instead of complicated-- thus not helpful

Leica just gave me macro lens today to play with today, I'll shot some junk with it tomorrow
