Our friends at JNC (Japanese Nostalgic Car) got a look at the new Z and coined the term "Z34B" (fitting as it is still a Z34, version B) and liken it to the Z32 for some interesting reasons:
I’m not buying a new one anyway, but I would love to see the car in person to get a visual feel for it compared to the Supra. Initial photos look pretty bland, but that’s easy enough to change with a drop and some proper wheels, so we shall see.
I tend to think the hood isn't raised/bulged, rather, equipped with downward, curved openings for upwards directed heat exchange and possibly pressure reduction on the front end for - as Trav said - aerodynamics. Thusly...
In an unvented hood car (like a normal street car), the air through the radiator/aux coolers creates a huge trapped pocket of swirling hot air which creates pressure underhood and that would normally be vented downwards, under the car, possibly creating lift and drag. (Or at least disturbing the air flow underneath and, at high speed of course.) Channeling said hot air up through the hood creates a low speed draft (higher pressure) which, when combined with a smooth underbelly to create a higher speed (lower pressure) path for air offers better downforce, hence aero improvement.
Or so I've come to understand it. Maybe we have someone well versed in wind tunnel testing that could substantiate.
A year and a month since I last posted in this thread.
And I still haven't seen an RZ34 in the wild. Have seen two pre-production units; plus, I know our club president has one and Z Car Garage has been messing with them and driving them on the track (pace car duties) but when will one appear near me??
But aside from my grumpy comment, there's development going on from the factory. Note the new go-for-production lip - guessing it will appear as standard on the Nismo version but supposedly will be offered as a dealer option on any Z trim level.
it's May, 2023, and I still have not seen a new Z in the wild. I really don't think they are selling very well. I would have if they were because for work I'm on the road everyday. for 3 years now I've been seeing new Supras (Z4 i40 Coupes) regularly.
I don't understand the pricing. it looks to me like the performance model was the intended target and the base model was reduced 10K by cutting features, instead of the other way around. If I were to buy a new one, I would grab a base. The LSD, brakes, and seats are a nice improvement, but I could do that on my own over time. that being said, I'm glad Nissan dropped the five models down to two.
I'm not averse to the cost of a new car, but I just don't think it's a good value. I'll look at the used market in a few years. there are so many other cars I would rather own in the meantime. like a Z34.1 which can be had now for teens/ low 20s. I've had incredible fun in my z33 the past two years and have never actually driven a 370Z. I'll probably end up picking one up instead of the new Z.
If you consider a recent 370Z like 2020, is the new Z34.2 really an improvement? I don't think so. I think it's moving into GT territory, and may not even be a sports car anymore. it might as well have a back seat then be called a GTR Jr. but that's kind of harsh....
They may have people from all over the country calling. As soon as they hear the $10k mark-up, they hang up. That's why it's still there. Just look on Autotrader, there's dozen for sale at sticker and even under sticker. I even saw a Proto for sticker. Dealer's are quickly learning, it's better to move the metal at sticker than it is to sit on it for months.

I don't know. when I checked AutoTrader, I saw massive markups on every single one listed. no wonder I've never seen one of these cars in person, no one is buying them except the owners of Z1...

No one sells "rare" (harder to get) cars at sticker; much as they'd like to say they do. Note that the ads specifically state "MSRP". If you call, they'll say "If you're serious, come on in and we can talk." without talking price. Ask me how I know.
