Hey Toby, I know Mike had the yellow overlays on his car and failed inspection, I think on the premise that any alteration of the appearance or effectiveness of the headlamps is unsafe and therefore against the law. He ended up taking them off so that he could pass.

Yeah, any lighting changes are no-no in VA. I'd like to get some clear headlights but I doubt that would fly.

Actually... clear bra over the headlights is OK.. and .. several police officers said that as long as I was not speeding or doing anything stupid.. then the yellow on the headlights did not bother them at all .. however the VA inspectors manual says that "Anything placed in front of or on the headlights that alters its color or feild of light" will not pass.

Toby -- I had dark black headlight covers on my dodge truck for 5 yrs and never had a problem. I left them on day and night. I have also not been stopped for my yellow lights.

Default I’m not a laywer but I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night:

States don't write their own lighting guidelines: they’re too long and complicated. They use DOT guidelines which are also too long and complicated. Generally, all lighting must be a specific color, and be able to be seen from a minimum distance. Altering lighting usually violates one the rules, or both.

So technically, smoked lights violates Virginia law.

You're kidding, right? NOTHING is legal in VA! Just kidding, but that's what it seemed like when I lived there.
