Default Virginia radar detector owners...

Like many in VA I would like to own a radar detector for use on road trips, but have yet to purchase one. Anyone out there in VA that owns one and maybe has it hard wired, just doesnt use it during normal driving? Wondering if I have any options other than plugging it in whenever I go out of state.

Thanks, I know how to do a search, it was my first stop as it always is. The fact that radar detectors are banned in Virginia creates a unique environment which is why my questions isnt "which radar detector do I buy" or "where do I mount it". Thanks.

I live in maryland and have an escort 8500 x50. I drive into VA pretty often mostly on 495 through to tysons corner etc. I used to turn it off and take it off the windshield when i entered Va but recently I have been leaving it on and mounted and no problems so far. I have a few friends that do the same and no one has been pulled over for it yet (fingers crossed). i have a feeling that they wont pull you soley for the detector but rather will get you for it if they get you for something else.

I used the escort hardwire kit that they sell and it was a 2 minute job to hardwire it to the fuse box. Also you can leave it plugged in and simply turn it off which eliminates the need to constantly have to mount it to the windshield or wherever you choose to mount it.

Not sure if this answers your question but I hope it helps.

my roomate has his V1 hardwired with the remote display custom mounted behind the steering wheel. However, the V1 is by the mirror which may be a problem but he hasn't gotten nabbed yet. I however, got nabbed by just having the suction cup mount on the windshield when the actual detector was under the passenger seat and not plugged in (I really hadn't been using it). I beat the ticket. I plan on hardwiring eventually and am going to try to mount the V1 by the rear hatch and use the remote display.

I have the 8500 X50 hardwired to the cigarette lighter in the console. I then have the remote display velcroed to the side of the console. makes it pretty easy to see, and can just reach my hand over and mute it. I am still working on places to put the detector itself. i have it above the seat belt right now, and it seemed to pick up ok when i drove down to nc this past weekend.

I got the worst ticket of my life in Virginia. Apparently anything over 80mph is reckless driving. I was clocked at 83 in a 65. I hadn't changed lanes in fifteen minutes, the interstate was virtually empty. 6 point ticket. I hired a lawyer and got it lowered to 2 points and I had to take a defensive driving course. Keep in mind I have an impecable driving record. This was my first offense in almost 10 years.

I got pulled over for mine in VA and I live in MD.. $100 ticket.. I would mount it high if you have a tint band you can hide it there. If not Prob better to not have it on during the day. They can't take your detector away from you. I think the law is that it is illegal for you to operate a radar detector in VA not illegal for you to own or be in possesion of one.

actually they can take it away from you and you have to go claim it after your court date.
Va. Code Ann. § 46.2-1079

A. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth when such vehicle is equipped with any device or mechanism, passive or active, to detect or purposefully interfere with or diminish the measurement capabilities of any radar, laser, or other device or mechanism employed by law-enforcement personnel to measure the speed of motor vehicles on the highways of the Commonwealth for law-enforcement purposes. It shall be unlawful to use any such device or mechanism on any such motor vehicle on the highways. It shall be unlawful to sell any such device or mechanism in the Commonwealth. However, provisions of this section shall not apply to any receiver of radio waves utilized for lawful purposes to receive any signal from a frequency lawfully licensed by any state or federal agency.

This section shall not be construed to authorize the forfeiture to the Commonwealth of any such device or mechanism. Any such device or mechanism may be taken by the arresting officer if needed as evidence, and, when no longer needed, shall be returned to the person charged with a violation of this section, or at that person's request, and his expense, mailed to an address specified by him. Any unclaimed devices may be destroyed on court order after six months have elapsed from the final date for filing an appeal.

Except as provided in subsection B of this section, the presence of any such prohibited device or mechanism in or on a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth shall constitute prima facie evidence of the violation of this section. The Commonwealth need not prove that the device or mechanism in question was in an operative condition or being operated.

B. A person shall not be guilty of a violation of this section when the device or mechanism in question, at the time of the alleged offense, had no power source and was not readily accessible for use by the driver or any passenger in the vehicle.

That VA law sucks!

The day I installed mine I went on a long drive. I gotta tell you, I felt like I was a caged lion set free.

It was amazing because most of the cops around here leave their radar on all the time. The radar detector alerted me (and still does) if they are anywhere near me.

For a while (I've had it a year now) it made me feel invincible. After getting "trapped" by a very clever cop (speed trap) I have toned it down just a little.

(I'm in GA)
