Montomery County Mobile Speed Cameras go LIVE.
Montgomery County Drivers... FYI

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Remember Montgomery County's plan to catch speeders with mobile radar cameras?
After a postponement earlier this month, tickets will be issued starting Wednesday.
"The shake out period is over," says Rockville City Council member Susan R. Hoffmann. "It's time to pay the piper."
The mobile speed cameras catch motorists traveling at least 11 mph over the speed limit. Tickets won't put points on licenses, but offenders will get $40 citations in the mail.
Montgomery County Police maintain the object isn't to raise money, just to get people to slow down.
"Thousands of people already have received warnings," Hoffmann says. "In fact we learned from our police chief that one person had received seven warnings. It seems that some people just won't learn."
The cameras are primarily located in Rockville, but others are spread throughout the county, usually in the suburbs or areas near schools.
"We want to make sure that we have safe neighborhoods and that our kids have a safe route to school," says Maryland State Del. Bill Bronrott, D-Montgomery.
Police originally intended to issue tickets from the vans equipped with radar cameras the week of April 15.
Officials postponed the enforcement date so they could put up more warning signs about the cameras.

Now those stupid cops that turn on their sirens just to pass through a red light will get their dam pictures taken. They're the corrupt ones, not the individuals. Good thing none of us have to worry, we all drive the speed limit right guys? =)
at least they won't give you points. $40 is much better than having points and increasing insurance. Good thing the cameras are in residential areas and we only speed on the highway ( I -95) right?

But I do agree it is better than getting points or a heavier fine - aren't most speeding tickets usually around $80-$100 depending on how fast

In a way I think these types of cameras are total BS (as mdracer said, what's next from Big Brother), but I think the county could have been much more a$$holes about it then they are. I mean, I think its actually kind of nice of them to put up warning signs about the cameras, give you 10mph to go over the limit, and then at worst send you a $40 ticket with no points... Could definitely have been worse had they no signage, 5mph over tickets, and 2 or more points to license depending upon speed. Also, if they are only near schools and residential areas, I think that's fine. I know I get pi$$ed when kids in their riceburners drive past my place at 45+ in a 25 and my little 18 month old nephew is around, maybe playing on the porch or something. It's just not safe...
And this is coming from someone who's lost his license for speeding (4 tickets in a 1 year period, 5 in 2 years), so I definitely am not the 'granny driver'. However, I think 10 over in residential areas and schools is very reasonable.

Couldn't you concievable beat these tickets by saying that you were no the individual operating the vehicle at the time of the ticket? The police would have no way to prove that you were and would therefore have to throw it out.

I assume they work the same way red light tickets do.. does not matter who is driving, as long as the ticket is paid, thats all they care about... hence the no point system
I got a speed camera ticket in DC a while back (where I was lucky I guess, 'cause I was quite a bit more than 10 mph over and I got only a $50 fine). Sucks they're in my own damn neighborhood now . . .
