DC METRO area is expensive period. You will be paying 1k easily for an apt. EASILY. The closer you are to DC, the more expensive it is. I used to live in Germantown and I paid almost $1200 by the end of my contract for a 1 bdr/1bath . Rockville will be more expensive. $1200-$2000 easily for a 1 or 2 bedroom.

They could buy my townhouse and pay less than that a month.

It's expensive... It's a buyer's market right now so I'd probably look at that before renting if possible...

When I left DC, I was part of a contract in Courthouse Place for $2350 for a 2-bedroom. Four months afterwards same place was 2750 plus parking. Nice place, but expensive... There is simply very little affordable housing in the DC area; even 25 miles out of the city it's still outrageously expensive.
