No contest: Virginia. This state has many clever methods of extracting the most money from your bank account. Northern Virginia is different than the southern 3/4 though; they are like two different states. That being stated, NOVA is immensely more expensive than the south.
The commute? Between the hours of 8AM and 8PM, VA has the largest parking lots in the nation.
I hate this state.

Personal property tax is friggin ridiculous, I couldn't agree more. Is it just Fairfax County that imposes this tax?

According to this table, in 2005, MD residents pay more taxes overall than VA residents.

According to this table, MD has a higher cost of living standard than VA.
Once again, popular perception is refuted by the reality of facts. It is an undisputed fact that living in VA is cheaper than living in MD.

northern VA and the rest of the state is in 2 different categories...it's like living in another country.
again, i'm not comparing statewide VA v. MD..i'm only taking a region of both states.

Yes but if you are comparing areas and not the state, Boston is one of the most expensive cities to live in through out the entire united states. It has a higher cost of living than San Francisco which has always been very expensive to live in.
