Default Got ticketed tonight...

As I was driving out of the Pentagon city mall, i noticed a motorcycle cop flip a U turn in front of me. He pulled up behind me and flipped on his lights. I pull to the side thinking, "this cop is an idiot, i didnt do anything wrong". The cop walks up to my window and asks me if i had a radar detector. Wondering how he knew, i said, "yes". To make a long story short, he tells me he can detect radar detectors if theyre on. (I HAD NO IDEA). I thought i was safe with a built in one...guess not. Just thought you all should know cops can detect radar detectors. The end.

i think it also depends on what kind you have whether or not they can detect it?

did you get a ticket? you are lucky if you didn't, the new driving laws in VA say that you could get that nice extra fine for having one.

seriously? i need to go and find that legislation again, maybe its still a sticky at the top of this forum. i could have sworn a radar detector was eligable for the extra $1500 fine they tack on to everything now...

guess i am wrong tho?

Maybe it hasnt passed yet, but I just ran out to my car to double check. Its a $40 fine for an illegal radar detector and an additional $60 for a processing fee.

no i'm talking about the abusive driver fees that went into effect July 1 of this year. i didn't see the old thread though, so i'm not sure. You would know if you got it though.

my friend got a DUI, and she had to pay $1500 up front, will have a huge court fee, AND she has to pay $900 a year for 3 years under those new fees.

$100 for a radar detector isn't bad unless it makes your insurance go up.

yeah not sure man I believe it's "VG-2" or "Spectrum(something like that)" in which the cops use to detect a radar detector. It is said to buy a new radar detector every 3 years because of changing technology.

Sounds like the officer had a Spectre, which is the radar detector-detector. All radar detectors are detectable, some more than others, except one, the BEL STI Driver. Everyone I have heard that has been caught was because it was sitting in their window in plain sight. I have a V1 myself and only really use it when I go on spirited drives.

Did he take your RD? Are you from VA?

Don't come up to NJ....you will think VA was awesome after living here...

but radar detectors are legal (they get around this by pacing you). I never had any cops take a look at me with my Valentine 1 in VA...must be immune to the radar detector-detector....

yeah radar detector - detectors aren't anything new. Depends on the frequency/band you are using but generally doesn't make you safe. It sounds like you got off easy. Good thing they didn't haul away ur car 'cause the detector is built in :P

Edit: At least you didn't do a flyby of 130 mph on purpose like some members here

Yea...they have those detectors, and $40 sounds about right.

the $1500 price tag because of the DUI. If we get someone who is DUI, we have to give a certain amount of tickets (no quota or anything just to show why that person was stopped, etc etc etc) If it is because of a DUI accident, then the tickets need to be piled on.

I haven't heard of a legislation for the detectors though...then again, here in PA we don't really use them.
