Pho Bac in Chantilly FTW ~ someone must have heard about the "pho 500" a few years ago.

Some many still up this late hour....

Must be all this talk about food. YUM!

A lot of pho places, along with most other Viet restaurants, are not good for large parties. Packed like sardines is a good analogy - An Loi, Pho 75, much of the special, niche restaurants, etc.

Meet then eat at an off hour is good. Parking will most definitely suck anywhere.

Not @ the place in Woodbridge .... that would be a nice little cruze, from springfield mall to Woodbridge~10 min~ they're cheap, quick and no one there speaks english; so you know the food is good.

Sat Circuit City near springfield 11:30
can i start the list?

Pho is Columbia is garbage! Being crowded doesn't mean good/authentic when it comes to asian food. Most pho places that are crowded only mean they're in a great business location(no or little competition) and the busy atmosphere make people think it's good. Honestly, american people simply can't tell good asian food from bad ones and vietnamese people realize that. Why waste money on flavoring when people can't differentiate. What you get is a watered down version. I'm viet and i can't even tell sometimes, but teh columbia locations are bad enough for me to differentiate.

Pho An Loi was good when they first open, once the business trickled in, they reduce the flavored (and meat) than later sold the business to korean owner. A good place to check out is in Aspen hill shopping center where conneticut and georgia ave sorta merges. moral of the story is, the best pho places are any that are just opening up. That's when the pho is at it's best, once they start banking, they'll sell out and only care about the profit and not the taste.

Btw - Everyone should also try good bun bo hue, for lovers of the very spicy [when done right]. The best places are around the Eden Center/7-corners.

www.phofever.com has a nice national directory by state and region.

Frederick
* Viet Aroma - ok cuz local to our [Fred/Mt.A] area

Germantown
* Pho 81 - a favorite of relatives
* Pho Song Long - a favorite of mine

Rockville
* Pho 75 - another favorite but BUSY at peak times; tight parking and seating. They are a chain with a few places in MD/VA.

Columbia
* Pho Dat Thanh - a favorite near my office; amongst co-workers; solid
* An Loi - very good but tight parking and seating; BUSY at peak times

There are hosts of other small pho places in the region. The above are where I and family usually frequent in MD. We often go to NOVA for the specialty stuff that the non-Viet/asian may not like.

There's a Pho place off of 198 near Gold's Gym and directly across from a Nissan dealership. I keep wanting to walk in and try some, but don't know much about it. What's the diff between Pho and Cup 'O Noodles?

Yup! That's the way a friend explained it to me. She said Pho was basically a bowl of noodles that you can add spices and meat<?> to. So my question is, what's the diff between this and some spicy Ramen? I'd rather ask before buying some and being "surprised".

That's why I differentiate everyday food vs. exceptional food. The Columbia places are acceptable and, importantly, close to work. I just can't eat burgers, pasta, and stuff week long. I would do a bowl of pho for breakfast if there were places serving in the early hours.

None of them, especially in MD, can do bun bo hue and banh xeo even close. I always go to VA to get bun bo hue. My wife crushes all with banh xeo. You know she's good at it when my entire family consider her's the best even when compared to the specialty places in VA. Her canh chua ca/tom is also exceptional and on par with the best in the family.

Go to my earlier post with pics and links. There is a world of difference.

Not sure who owns An Loi in Columbia now, but ever since the owner sold it I haven't been back. The kitchen is full of people who aren't even asian, no wonder the food sucks.
