Default FT: Valve Body Upgrade question

I was wondering what this process entailed and what the benefit for us 5AT guys would be?

What does it replace and what are the gains? Is this something you see in the lower end of the spectrum or do you see/feel the gains in the higher side?

Also have any of the Mid-A guys had this done?

Ken are you planning on going FI? If you do this upgrade is pretty much a must for 5AT.

A VB upgrade won't give you 'gains'. It will firm up the shifting so when you add serious power (FI) you don't grenade the trans. You will also want an upgraded trans cooler.

it makes the shifts faster and firmer and gives you some life out of your trans when going FI from what I have read

What upgrade? I did the simple one through Hills and am very happy. It's called Trans-Go. I know I had trouble finding the kit and ended up ordering it from Oregon. I think I got the last one in the continental US (about 2 years ago). It includes stronger springs and drills out a few of the openings in the VB. All total, it was about $4-500 including tranny fluid change. There are a lot more expensive deals where you send them your VB for them to re-do. All of those are pricey! Yes, it makes the shifts much faster and a lot more firmer. The slower a AT shifts, the more wear on the tranny. Mine is NA and it is fine for me. SuperchargedG has it and is big FI. I was told if you make big power you have to upgrade more internals (clutch packs and the like) and go to a high stall torque converter. The majic number I was given was about 400 WHP on the stock tranny internals.

I like mine. After a recent re-tune at Hills (not re-tuned from Hills but another tune at an other shop), it shifts MUCH harder. Apparently Nissan tries to take some power out of the engine in the 2-3 shift (maybe other shifts too) to extend tranny life. My car used to "lay down" when going to 3rd. Now, it really bangs into gear and just keeps on pullin'. I also have paddle shifters and use those all the time now even for normal driving.

If you want a ride just let me know........you wont believe how hard it shifts. But in normal driving it is pretty docile.

One thing you must absolutely buy with a vb upgrade and more horsepower (FI) is a LARGE Trans Cooler. I can't emphasize this enough.

Definitely and get a monitor on it so you know when it's getting hot. I did all this at once and my tranny runs about 190-200 in the summer even on hot track days. In the winter, it will run 160ish. We tested and there is a good 30 degree drop between the input side and the output side of my B&M cooler. The HKS Camp2 makes a nice monitoring system. Frank @ Hills can set you up.
