SCCA Performance Driving and Track Trials
The last SCCA performance driving experience (PDX) is happening the weekend of October 23 and 24, 2010 at Summit Point main circuit. This circuit is fairly fast and a blast to drive. Instructors are included for all novice drivers and higher categories if they want instruction. You get 4 thirty minute sessions on track on Saturday for $250, three sessions on Sunday for $150 or both days (7 sessions) for $350. To participate you need to be an SCCA member and weekend memberships are available for $10. PDX drivers only need basic safety equipment such as a helmet of Snell 1995 or newer and a completed tech form. Cars are scrutinized for basic things such as "junk in your trunk", seat belts, floor mats, break pads, wheel bearings, battery tied down, tire wear, etc. To participate in Track Trials you need a SCCA competitive license and more detailed tech inspection.
This is a lot of fun in a relatively safe environment. It would be great to see a big turnout from the Z community. A few Zs besides mine usually do show up. However, things do happen. For example, a Dodge Charger was totaled at the last event due to break pad failure on LAP #2 and the time before that a Scion TC was totaled due to driver error on a fast portion of the track.

That's what I meant by a more in depth tech. Basically I believe your car has to pass inspection as for club racing or pretty close to it. Specific size and type of roll cage at least. Most of the cars in the time trial a month ago were full blown race cars. Anyway, the point is don't show up in your completely street driven car and expect to do SCCA Time Trials like you might in Redline Time Attack street class.
Thanks for the information. I will be there on Sat with the BMW NCCA folks. This is the last race for the AutoX series. I think I will do the Sunday package...hmmm. Oh and there are only a few die hard Mid-A people that actually track their car on the forums. I can count them on one maybe two hands. I will definitely come look you up when I'm done racing. You're going to be in the main paddock right?

Sunday is cheaper anyway......I wish my front 2 piece rotors were all spider cracked or I would bail on Cumberland Sunday to participate. I just don't feel like spending 400-500 bucks this late in the season to do one event.....Next season I'll be back on track. Until then....autox for the rest of the year.
Also, for those who do time trials (I don't think anyone here actually does). Roll bars I believe suffice, but must meet SCCA regs. I know the STI at the last event didn't have a full cage (at least from my quick peak). So you don't need a full blown club level (w2w) spec cage like the T1, T2, T3, etc do. They do need to be properly padded, use harnesses, etc though.
Off topic, Dorrian, do you have any interest in running with Autocrossers Inc tomorrow? The event is in Waldorf. They usually have very good course (very large lot), and several national champs will be in attendance. It is basically club level SCCA...same classes, course designers, and protocol. Reason I ask.....is that they are accepting walk ups.

Generally you can run time trials if you are in advanced (or an instructor). The safety equipment is what really separates the TT guys from the average advanced HPDE person. Fred Kelley usually runs his roadster, but scca wouldn't let him on the main circuit without the factory five challenge roll bar.....which he doesn't have. They do allow his roadster on Shenandoah though.....go figure. He was in Ben Lambiotte's coupe for the last TT, which is a tube frame car to start with.

Long *** drive.....about an hour and a half each way. Course was very fast, and some very good drivers were in attendance. I won BSP, but we only had like 4 cars. I thought I should have been a full second quicker then I ended up, but oh well.
Another 350Z.....not sure if the owner was on here. An sti that was co-driven and something else I can't remember. I coned away a run that would have won class by almost a full second, but my second best was still about .5 ahead of second. I really didn't drive well.....I finished behind some cars that I usually beat by a full second at CDC/SCCA. Not sure what was going on. I think Jon Moon ran a 50.9x to my 51.2x for comparison....since I know you run with him at BMW.
