You mean an americana? You cant armbar from a side mount or half guard, you may be referring to a kimora or americana (most dont know the diff)

I like approaching either of those from the half guard as opposed to say an americana mounted as you described because you actually use the opponents guard as leverage with very little chance of a reversal (rollover)

Most noobs shouldnt be trying to put one leg over a head and pulling up an opponent to stuff their arm behind their back way too easy to lose balance if not trained.

There's umpteen arm bars. Stand up next to a guy, grab has arm and wrap yours around it, bend his arm back til it stops and you've got an arm bar.

Yes and no. There's 23948098324 different schools that might have different names for every little thing where other schools might just call it an arm bar.

Since UFC/MMA crap, there's been so many names for so many different things. Not sure where half of them came from.

Exactly. You could do a standing armbar, flying, it doesn't matter.

Arm lock is an arm bar, it involves the arm call it that. An omoplata would involve the shoulder so it would be called a shoulder lock. Then of course there are wrist locks. You get the idea.

Above photo is a Kimura and the one before that is an armbar and the one before that with the GIANT man would be considered flying by most. If the above image was being cranked the other direction it would be an Americana.

I train bjj myself and love it. A simple white belt right now but been at it a few hard months and competed.

You can straight definitely armbar from either of those positions. Side mount is a great spot to pull an armbar. It'll just be harder. Most would assume it's a move from only closed guard or side control. The kimura from half guard is well used since the motion can get them to roll onto you.

BJJ is great but its taking x many moves and downsizing it to fit their teaching style. Also I don't believe BJJ teaches self defense stuff, more so sport fighting.

Example, we teach that anytime you do a side mount arm bar Most styles teach you to lay on leg across the chest and another leg across the face. In sport this is great, however in self defense the person being put into an arm bar will bite a chunk out of your leg, We teach to kick the face then plate the foot under the neck/head.

Also anything is fare game from bending small joints (not allowed in MMA style martial arts) as with bites and anything else...

I love traditional martial arts because nothing is watered down, you learn everything rather then a school that takes 4 out of 20 moves from X and 6 out of 20 moves from Y and calls it their own. We learn everything.
In Bjj there are many different rules. It's okay to bend four fingers but anything less is illegal. You can only leg lock in certain divisions, etc. As for taking a chunk out of your leg that is possible and most would assume that when they get bit kick them, but when training in bjj you don't need to teach that.

I learn bjj and judo on a weekly basis. Good schools like mine, Crazy 88, have a designed curriculum for all levels of students and it's proven. I guarantee if I were to be confronted in the street, bar, wherever my jiu-jitsu skill could save my life and be both offensive and defensive in combat.

If I sweep you off your feet and go to mount I'm going to pound your face in and if I have to I can always transition to a sub of some sort. We never know what will happen until faced with the situation honestly.

If I sweep an attacker off his feet I'm going to run away, that's self defense. As soon as I mount the guy I become the attacker and can easily be attacked from a random friend of the guy on the bottom.

Going to the ground on the street is the last thing on my mind when in a street fight. As soon as I get a chance to run, i'm out.

So whats going on this weekend guys? Lets iron this out before Sunday...

Chaser-You train at Crazy 88?

I trained with Julius when he first started his school out of a small room over at the Body Factory gym, I stopped training the first year he had 1 of the 2 locations he now has off Rt1 behind the dealership. I used to do gi and no gi and competed as well.

Tell him I said hello. Not one day goes by when I dont think about going back.
