Mid A Martial Arts, anyone game?
Doing a mid a martial arts class starting next week studying traditional open handed Japanese martial arts. What we study is everything from stand up punches/kicks, counters, take downs, throws, grappling, chokes, and even breathing forms.
For more information on what we will being studying, check out http://www.koryu-uchinadi.com/
The down side. We don't really have a place to workout unless we make the trip to NVA. Or someone knows of a big empty space. The thought is to practice at our random homes (different Mid A homes) 3 times a month and make the trip to NVA once a month to do a full blown workout with mats so we can do ground work (take downs, grappling and such) after class we can all head out to a random restaurant and shoot the chit about martial arts/cars/whatever. When in NVA we can hit up Eden Center for legit Vietnamese food or Kimchi town for legit Korean. We can also car pool if needed.
The up side. until you test for your first belt, it's 100% free! There might be a fee to use the NVA gym guessing $5-10, if that's an issue dont go, just work out at our homes for free. Once you do test and move up in the ranks you will be asked to join koryu uchinadi currently it cost $75 a year for membership and last time I checked belt testing cost $20-25. If you earn a belt your certificate comes straight from Japan and is recognized around the world. This is the real deal, not Kick Connection or Tony Lee's Karate School where your certificate comes from a computer printer from their office. (yes most western karate places does this)
If you're looking for MMA camp style training this is not for you. This is the real deal traditional Japanese martial arts, that means learning all the basics, the forms, the applications for the forms and also everything the MMA guys do + tons tons more. If you want to get on the ground and roll around, we can make it happen but this is going to be about learning everything, not just how to roll around and win in a rule bound fight. #1 goal is self defense.
All the throws from Judo, all the ground work of jujitsu, the counters from aikido, guess what, we study it. Anything open handed, it's covered.
If anyone wants to take it a step further you can even get into weapons. I wont teach it but I can make it happen.
As far as the teacher goes. I plan on teaching it, however I cannot test anyone I do not hold a rank of an instructor, the guy who runs the NVA class is one of the main guys in the US for koryu uchinadi he will be one of the guys who will test people for rank.
So far we have 4 people.

Main issue we have is space. Trying to track down a place we can use. If we don't have a lot of space we can still do a lot of things but just starting out it will make classes really boring since a lot of the easier things to do that fills time in the class can't be done. Rolls, break falls, minor entry level grappling....
We'll have to stick with basic blocks, one step attack and counters as with broken down forms. Worst case we might need to make the trip to NVA twice a month to make use of the mats.
If anyone knows of a gym, rec center, dance studio, or a large basement let me know.
E10's new house has a great setup for us, however its tile and no mats so it only works well for forms and setting up take downs, not following through. either way if he doesnt rent out the basement E10s house will make for a great spot.

For now we will not worry about mats, no reason to invest any money into something half of you might not want to stick with.
One thing I do want to push for is a uniform.
http://store.titleboxing.com/century...m-elastic.html
Super cheap karate uniform $20 and come with a belt.
It helps keep sweat to a minimum it also protects your normal clothes from ripping and protects your skin from getting marks on it from clothes grabs/grappling, it also allows you to train more chokes/take downs. both stuff you'll want to use on the street and stuff you'd use for sport fighting.
Just keep in mind, cheap uniforms are cheap. I've done my share of ripping peoples uniforms wide open from throws/grappling. mostly the top part rips, not too often do the pants rip. Thankfully. For starters I see zero issue with using the cheapest of cheap uniforms. Anything for when some sweaty guy is laying on top of you.... you'll thank me later.
I wish you guys were closer. I have all the space in the world and even have the big mat in my basement and a striking bag.
That price is mad cheap too. Where my son takes karate its $100/month, $50 for belt test, $14 for belt color change, $8 for the matching liner on your uniform and so on. I play poker with two of the owners, they always cry about being poor, but they are rolling in it

I trained one on one with my instructor many years and never paid anything for it outside of the basic membership fees and the cost of the gym space.
I dug up some old pictures from the aftermath of a seminar I did when I was around 18 or 19. We were doing a lot of grappling that day and one of the woman (cute girl
) I was working with didn't a top for her uniform so I let her use mine while I use wore a wife beater.not only does it help keep you dry from other peoples sweat but also keeps you from pinching the hell outta your skin causing bruises and such.

Jeff, let me know when you want to start doing this so I can adjust my schedule.
I'll be down depending on what day and time you're trying to do this. I may have a whole floor available for training as well, I'll have to check w/ building management first though.
