[NSFW] Mid-A Epic Random-ness: Third Encounter
Fed employees are not overpaid its the contractors. As for 3x as much IDK about that, more like double. On the plus side the cut contractors not dod employees, so you do have that for a positive.
didnt say it was legit
Edit(add)
the point is its a burrito at the end of a day that makes it at least 1% legit deff not something i would call real mexican food, but it is a real dish making it legit but not FOB legit

The bigger problem is the dead weight that cant be gotten rid of because of the union and other things. Its hard to get rid of useless gov't employees. Our contractors are paid competitively and not overpaid. They also do a lot of the work.
You cant get rid of the govt employees until you get rid of the contractors. This sequester will be good and bad. We may be able to shed the dead weight at some point but we will have to lose some quality people before that.
Just my 0.02
In most cases the people arent making double. The company that they work for may be making double but in most cases that doesnt translate down to the employee. Most of those high paid position are very skilled ones that arent easily found in the job market. A contractor driving a bulldozer isnt making double what he would.

In short, the dollar amount government pays a contractor cannot be viewed dollar to dollar. For every dollar, a big % goes to profit of the contracting company, another chunk goes to overhead, fringe, G&A, etc, etc.. the guy that actually WORKS for the government as a contractor could end up getting almost half of what the government pays. Not to mention the government doesn't have to pay the contractor benefits. Also adding in the risk factors for being a contractor. Contractors could be jobless for months in between projects. And Jonathan is right that I don't believe any government employee could do what I do
The math is a little complicated but stop hating on us contractors Last edited by bb1314; May 15, 2013 at 07:48 AM.

Ethan I have to disagree, even after all those factors, dollar for dollar employees of contracting companies are still making significantly more money than their government counterparts.
I know for a fact that my colleagues that do the same exact work I do( in the same office) are making 40-60k more than I am. Same job, same work, they are contractors, I am not. (not to mention they are lazy as hell, but that is specific to my work place)
Things get even more absurd when you look at what contractors get paid to go overseas, vs what the Govies get. Again this is in my line of work, but its a big industry.
As for being jobless we recently fired a contractor for time fraud...he went back to his company, got paid while they found him a new position and was hired back into the same line of work at a different agency.
I know 3 other contractors that lost their positions recently, they were kept on overhead and all found jobs within a month.
In this area if you have a clearance and experience, and you are at a reputable contracting company you really don't have much to worry about

Zain, I do agree that those contractors who simply get "jobs" because they have clearance is silly. So many of these guys are lazy idiots. I have worked with a lot of them in the past. But because they obtained clearance somehow they get job security and get paid absurd amount of money. Not fair to hard working Asian American like me who has undocumented relatives and non US-citizen immediate families that could never obtain a high clearance.
There are slackers in every part even gov people, so take that part out of the equation. As for having foreign national family, it is possible to get cleared with that. Bottom line is in the higher skill fields contractors do make a substantial amount more then gov employees.

I had worked for a contracting company for 7 years and then went govt. Same exact job. I am paid slightly more as a govt employee not including benefits. No where have I seen 40-60k differences in pay from contractor to govie. It could just be where I am.
The downside of contracting:
- no insurance
- no 401k company match
- no paid holidays
- if the company has no work on certain days, you stay home and don't get paid
- possible unemployment at any given time
Good to be a contractor if:
- you have some godly desirable skills/strong background/education/exp, therefore you don't fear unemployment because companies are lining up begging for you to work for them.
Bad to be a contractor if:
- you don't know how to market yourself/bad people skills/no desirable skills/weak background/lazy ninja
- no insurance
- no 401k company match

pretty common where I am, average seems to be 30k+ more.. and it goes up from there, especially when overseas work is involved.
