Default Good Racing Schools

The other day my parents told me that they would like to get me a trip to a racing school for X-mas and wanted to know what some good ones were. I'm thinking something not too expensive, but where you get to drive some cool cars and have a decent amount of track time. I'm interested in a road racing/auto-x school and not a drag racing school. I live in PA so something close would be nice, but I would travel if there is a really good school somewhere across the country. What are some suggestions?

Why not have them pay for several HPDEs so that you can learn the limits of your Z? After all, about 10 HPDE weekends = 1 racing school weekend. The only difference is that at the racing school, you usually don't have to pay for maintenance. I've found that a racing school can help supplement your experience, but can NEVER replace the experience of having more track days.

X nay on the SKIPPY ScHAY!
For the money and experience BERTIL ROOS'.......
I went through the following SKIPPY twice + car control clinic
SCCA with Danny Collins, Bertil Roos, Bondurant and my SCCA reg school.
I was very furtunate to have Bertil as my instructor. I had never done karts so car control was my biggest concern.
Bertil told me that every session he wanted me to spin. His theory about driving is either full throttle or 99.9%brake and no inbetween. He is a neat guy. but anyway.......The great thing about this was I was doing a 5 day program at the time....
there was no damage fee the first three days. That takes a lot of stress about baling up a car while trying to learn car control.
Now whne I went through this program it was back in 1993 so.....
The other choice I have ex if you are on the west coast is Derek Daly in Vegas. It a nice facility and DD is super cool. I was part of the Team greean Academy in 96 and 97 and all the guys there where great. PLUS....you in VEGAS!!!

Well, I hate to disagree with someone as experienced as dwnshift, and I haven't done Bertil Roos, so I have nothing to say about them.

But I did the Skip Barber 3-day racing school at Mid Ohio in the summer of 2001. At that time I had done about 10 1-day HPDEs and a couple of autocrosses.

I thought the SBRS was terrific. It was extremely well structured and thorough, the instructors were very good, and the cars were amazing. It was also a complete blast to run a track I knew well from watching the CART races (in person and on TV), but had never driven. I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to learn race driving technique.

Current prices for the 3-day school are over $3,000, which is a tad more than I'd like to pay. I got a special deal of $2,500 by signing up at a CART race, but they don't offer that anymore, as far as I can tell.

But still worth it! Especially if someone else is paying!!!

Skip Barber runs there and at lots of other great tracks around the country. Closest to you is probably my home track, Summit Point or Watkins Glen.

Here's the list from their Web site. www.skipbarber.com

They don't necessarily run at every track every year. Their schedule will be posted early in the new year.

CALIFORNIA SPEEDWAY (Fontana)
DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

you can look here http://www.laguna-seca.com/00misc.htm
to see who is renting out laguna seca (pretty challenging course, I dont plan to head over there until I get some more track time under my belt) This only shows events for the rest of the year (which are probably all sold out) but at least you can get the names of the companies who run there.
