Default V6 or 3 rotar engine for the 350z

i know it sounds impractical to get rid of the engine the z comes with (which is a good percentage of the huge price tag) and replace it with a triple rotary engine but bare with me.
i think i can design an engine lighter than the v6 and far more powerful.

what do you guys think of an an engine that can switch between a 2-rotar and 3-rotar at the flex of a lever inside the car?

HIGHLY inefficient, unreliable, and prone to failure, if it can be implemented at all.

Dont know about you but, I would rather have the V6 over the rotory anyday. It all about Torque, 150 ft lb for the rotory is good for hondas but not for the Z.

I think I'm going to scrap my brand new engine that has a great power band with lots of usable torque and horsepower and go with a power source that implements a "flux capacitor", that way I can go back in time whenever I want to...

Maybe some of you guys didn't notice, but he said he was going to DESIGN his own engine. Thats just funny, hahaha.

Eh,

Maybe you should keep your Z stock, and just wait for the next RX-7. Somehow they will get more power out of the RENESIS, but it sounds like turbos will be difficult due to emmissions. Maybe they'll just add another rotor.

Hehe, that would sure be nice.

Maybe putting a different engine in a car that already has a really good one is a bad idea, but why is it so funny that he wants to design his own? Aren't all engines "designed" by someone? If you think you can make a better engine, go for it.

yeah, your right anyone can design an engine better than the vq. just need a cad program, a mechanical engineering book, and some scrap metal. your right, what was I thinking, well i'm giong to go build a v 32, i'll be back in a few hours.

hey it sounds impractical, idiotic, and insane, but isnt that how most of our good ideas / inventions were created.. (well besides mistakes / accidents) i say if you ahve hte time money and knowledge (or ability to gain that knowledge) go for it... i wouldnt mind seeing some really wild even if impractical hybrid ideas pop up.. to each thier own, and try it seroulsy it'd be a one of a kind and you might stumble upon something groundbreaking.. a big might, but hey i've seen some really wierd thigns in my life and i'm only 20

ohh.. and would you be dragging that 3rd rotor with the motor when the lever has it turned off... wouldnt that be like driving a 6 cyl car and not igniting 2 cylinders... in otherwords, huge parasitic losses and horrible efficiency (im assuming thats why youd turn it off to somehow save gas or something like those caddies that can turn off a bank of cyl to save gas)

also.
make it a NA motor,, rotaries are really incraedible and reliable motors as long as they arent force inducted.. forced induction makes many more variables that can cause a disruption in the rotation etc. really really bad for rotaries.... rx7 anyone?

NA rotaries can be tuned to produce exquisite hp levels though.. if you do it right

well good luck

p.s. i think this thread is hoopla,, please prove me wrong

Yeah, I know designing an engine isn't the easiest thing in the world, but you don't have to be a genius to do it. All you need is the right equipment, and the knowledge. I don't know how helpfult hey are, but you can buy books on designing engines. I doubt that all of those guys that build the 7 second drag racers have a Masters in mechanical engineering.

P.S., Hoopjones, there's no need for sarcasm.

I'm not saying this guy can't design his own engine, maybe he can, but come on it is highly unlikely that one person can design a rotary engine that can change from 2 rotors to 3 with a flick of a lever, and for it to be more powerful than a commercial engine built by a multi billion dollar company. Hey, it is possible but come on what are the chances. And BTW, it does take something like a masters in mechanical engineering to have the qualifications to build a world class engine. This guy is probably just a teenager who's dreaming, and thats cool.

I guess it probably would be pointless to try building an advanced engine like that if it's your first time designing an engine. If I ever try it I'd probably try building a simple four-cylinder engine based on Honda's B16.

If this dude was really gonna design and build his own engine, THEN WHY THE HELL WOULD HE BE HERE ON THIS BOARD ASKING FOR OUR ADVICE?!

Good point.

Also, why would anyone pick a brand new, first production year, fresh off the lot 350Z for a potential engine swap (causing instant near-100% depreciation on the resale value)?

If this guy was for real, he'd be on a forum for true mechanics and he'd be using a different car...
