350z vs. camaro?
I had the pleasure of being behind this stoplight dual about 2 hours ago and it was a sight. It looked like a stock Z28, not an SS, didn't sound like any exhaust mods so I assumed it was stock. All I know about the Z is it was track and my boy could drive that thing. On green both these guys just disappeared the tires. Z28 took a bit of a jump but then they were just gone. I was in a 300M and not about to get busted with them(lotsa police around), so I wasn't close enuf to who was ahead when they lifted but I could tell it was close. Both lifted off about same time after maybe 750 ft? Anyone race a z28 yet?

if the rearend looked like this it was a LS1 car, 98+ got a new motor from 93-97 and a body change, 98+ run low 13s to high 12s, 93-97 are usually in the low 14-high 13 area, although both are hard to launch if its a M6 car, could have been either and the LS1 guy just spun, anything can happen on the street.
whats the typical 350Z run? best i'v seen was a 14.5 but i'm sure it can run better then that.

Actually one of my new road in track mags had the Z28's 1/4 mile time as 13.9@102.5 - I don't think you can say they would DESTROY a 350Z... I would probably come down to the better launch/driver.. And before somebody says it must of been this and that kinda a Z28, It was the everyday 2003 model 6-sp 325HP (might be off by a few, don't have the book with me) Z28..
And also remember your comparing a 3.5 V6 producing 287HP with a fossil powered by a 5.7 V8 Producing just 30 more HP..

Well if the mag said they got 13.9 at 102 from a LS1 i can conclude two things, either the car is messed up or the test driver doesnt know how to shift and launch. I run constant 13.0-13.1's at 109-110 with nothing more than LID (K&N) and catback, not even a full exhaust on 245 RSA tires(street psi) spinning like crazy until 3rd. I would assume the 350Z will need a blower to trap close to 110.

#1 2002 was the last year the Camaro and Trans Am were made
#2 325hp is pretty close to what LS1's are putting down at the wheels, they are very underated from the factory

BTW- What brought you to a Z board??

I personally spin my way to a 13.76 @ 105mph.
I would agree the 350Z to keep up till about 3rd gear in the LS1 65-70ish? then bye bye time. Reason for that? That is when a stock tired LS1 starts to get traction, at about 65mph.
I imagine you will ask me the same thing "Why am I here?"
Because I have been a Nissan/Datsun enthusiast for many years.
I agree that the Z28 would win in the long run (maybe not in top speed), i think its cool that the 350Z can be considered to hang with a Z28 which has close to 2 times the engine size and is concidered to be the last of the muscle cars... All I want from my 350Z when I get it is to toss a Injen intake in it and eventually run in the high 13's..
But my Ex had a Camaro Z28 (purple) 1996 and yes it was fast and looked sweet when clean but I absolutly hated driving in it, it was always hot (heat eminated from every inch of that cars underbody) and it rattled, interior looked like something I could put together from materials in my basement. The car had a new problem every day till she wrapped it on a pole.. It was almost a relief.. I recall a drive back with her from NY and the car's computer was shutting off and on stalling the car every min or 2.. It was the most nerve racking drive in my life.. But thats just my 2 cents.. Nice outside looks (but aged) and good power and V8 sound, but all else was..ummm.. you know..

I'm probably one of the very few (if any) who went from a Z28 (2000 model with intake and exhaust) to the 350z on this site. I traded because I wanted a sports car that was more refined while remaining affordable.
I will say right off the bat that my 350z is still in the "break in" period and is still being "babied" by me at this point.
That being said, I am without a dought the Z28 will win (should) any race with the less powerfull and nearly as heavy 350z, sans xcross.
Though I am impressed with the 350z's performance at this point, the "pin you to the seat" torque is simply not present with the much lower geared 350z.
Would I trade all over again? You bet. The Camaro feels like a BIG sedan with lots of power, while the Z is nimble and handles extremly well (despite its weight) and is a resonable performer in a drag race.
However, once I get past the "break in" of the Z things should get a little more interesting.

magazine numbers dont account for anything in the real world, the LS1 cars will typically run a low 13 with a good driver, there will always be bad ones and magazines making the cars look slower. Elevation, track condition, tire wear and weather also play a large part.
HP doesnt move cars, torque does, that "fossil" will rev just as fast as a VQ, put down more torque and do it with a flatter powerband as well, this is stock vs stock. the motors size is done for more then just performing stock, it's built with having more potential in mind, which it does being its 2.2L larger and carries an extra 2 cylinders, it weighs in at under 500 lbs as well.
