Default Should I be nervous? Friend bought mods...

My friend has a 2000 Celica GT-S with 48,000 miles on it now (only 5000 on engine - Looong story) and he currently has an AEM inake and a TRD exhaust on it. He has been to the track on many occasions running a personal best of 15.4@92.7MPH and usually runs Between 15.6-15.8@91-92MPH consistantly.

Now since I got my Z he has got a serious case of "keeping up with the Jones's" and has ordered the following mods, I might of missed one but o well:

-AEM Headers
-Short Throw Shift Kit
-Racing clutch kit
-Unortho Alum Flywheel
-Unortho Underdrive pulley
8mm Magnacore wires and plat-4 plugs (no biggie)
** ALL TO BE INSTALLED IN ABOUT A WEEK

He will be running on his Stock 16's wheels

He plans to dyno before and after mods also.. Any guesses as to what he might be running with these mods and how much HP you think he would gain? Truthfully I don't think I have much to worry about, but I think he should be running at least into the upper 14's? What do you all think?

I wouldn't sweat it...

If he goes FI, then start worrying!

Absolutely nothing to worry about on the drag strip. If he plays his cards right he's lucky to get 14.8-14.9. If you can drive, you'll be in the high 13's stock, and getting even better as your Z breaks-in over time.

Add those mods to the Z, plus a (hopefully) upcoming ECU and he'll forget what the front & side of your car looks like.

I would guess he probably gain maybe 20 horse at the most. I would also guess the most he could shave off his quarter is about 1/2 a second.

Instead of dropping all that money, he should have just sold the celica and bought a base Z!

Well the parts are totalling close to $3,000 and the installation of those parts (the ones were not doing ourselves) will be like an additional $1,000. I think he will be happy if he can just do consistant runs into the 14's.. But I think he was hoping for more than 20HP.. His intake/Exhaust already gave him nearly 20 rwHP. But it will be worth it if he can run consistantly between 14.8-15.0. Thats very competitive at the track since the average 1/4 run on street night is about 15.7@91.

Hmm, that was an ignorant post, now wasn't it? You might want to check again what a 2000 Celica GTS has for a drivetrain.

Stock GTS have been known to run 14.9's. I think its just a case of your friend being scared to run it to the revlimiter... Because high 14's are possible STOCK on that car.

LOL- My friend is scared of nothing in that car, he has already blown an engine and a tranny.. The redline is at 7800 and rev limiter comes on at about 8350 or so.. And I'll be damned if I ever see him shift under 8349RPMs on the road or the track. I think he needs to try some new launch techniques but his about best of 15.4@92.7 was actually achieved with a messed up tranny, it would grind HARD from 2nd - 3rd and bog the car down. In the offseason with a full new tranny and engine and more mods he should do nicely.

OK, you are right, I am an idiot. The old Celica GTS denoted a turbo, and for some reason, I thought the newer ones came with one too. So yes, a header will fit.

But no, you need not worry about your friend in the GTS unless he spends a good deal of money tuning his fuel mapping and has an LSD to keep that power to the ground.

Hah, that's pretty impressive. Increasing the rear wheel hp on a 2000 Celica? I thought they quit making the All Tracs

(sorry, couldn't stop myself)

I really dought that a intake and exhaust gave your buds GT-S 20FWhp, maybe 8-10fwhp if that..He will be lucky to get into the 14's with the mods you mentioned above. And, as far as the track being competitive, what kind of cars are running an average 15.7's? Could be abunch of neons as far as we know..

P.S
Oh, and by the way AEM dont even make headers. So its going to be hard for him to install that HEADER(only one)

LOL. rwHP .. hehehe.. so funny - people with there wise nit picking comments And I checked with him, its not an AEM set of HEADERS- all he knows is there being shipped from Japan and there for his car.. I just assumed it was AEM since most of the stuff he gets is.

They actually have a Dyno chart on the AEM site that shows 18 more HP with the intake on a GTS - he dyno'ed it after he installed that and a cat-back and showed just over 20 fwHP gain..

Well I was saying the average is about 15.7 at the track.. Thats concidering 150+ cars on a giving night. Minivans, trucks all the rice-a-ronis with intake-exhaust civics, accords running 17's and the vipers and the modded camaros, supra's, RX7's, DSM's cobra's, vette's running 12-14's.. Then the middle of the pack in the 15's you got your VW's, some stangs, probe V6's integera's, most VTEC'ers, seriously modded neons..

There's a huge variety, I remember the first time me or my friend ran a drag, we were still in highschool at the time and my friend had a 1996 Toyota Tercel 4MT (new at the time) and he decided to race at the time for fun. I had it on video, he got matched up with a SC's Camaro SS that ran an 11.5 in the 1/4 miles, i could barly keep them in frame with the camera.. He ran a respectful 17.4@80 with a bone stock tercel LOL

Quote from my friend after that race:
"All I remember is looking over and seening somebody with a helmet on and I thought, O boy am I gonna look stupid"

Mid to high 14's for him and low 14's for you...you should not have a problem even with his mods
