My post on a BMW M3 forum, race oriented!
Long but a decent story,
Sup guys. I dont own a m3 but yes i do respect what they have to offer. Tonight while sitting at a stoplight with a friend heading to the interstate 85/40 NC, I see a black M3 on the other side of the road. As i was checking his car out he reved his engine and i must say it sounded pretty good. To feed his ego I decided to return the favor and rev mine as well. Anyway the light turn green and we go opposite ways. About three minutes later I find myself in one of the two lanes to turn onto the highway. All of sudden there he is and he pases right by me and reves up again, so I assume he wants to race. Being a non BMW enthusiats my first thought was there is no way. I am aware of what the new M3's can do so i did not really want to test my luck. ! As we start out on the intestate my friend convinces me to try my luck, so I did. The traffic was bad so it took a few times before we could get a even start. On two of the occasions, if i had to guess we started dead even around 65-70mph. Both times we could never really make it past 130 but I was somewhat suprised to find that both time my 350z had just barely enough juice to edge him out. By no means was any of the races a blowout, it literally took me 60-120 or so to gain maybe 5 feet of leverage; a very close race. This was the first time I have ever really had a organized street race and I must say it was pretty fun. After a few more miles of driving I had to get off a exit b/c I was headed to a friends to play some xbox. As I got off the exit this M3 owner also pulled off so we ended at the closest gas station. After talking to this guy I find out his BMW is a 99, but i forgot to ask if he had any mods. Since I had the edge on him he assumed I had done something minor but I have not. He also stated that he has raced a 350 before on the intestate but beat him by a small margin. The reason I come to this forum is to find a lil information about the 99M3. How much HP does his car have. Since I won a close battle I would assume hsi car was stock (maybe ragged out who knows). Would you guys with a 99 M3 say that both our cars are tit for tat in a straight line battle. I am not here to brag so dont bash my and tell me that this guy sucked nor he should have demolished you. Just help me out and give me some opinions on our cars. My car is fast but its nothing drastic, just v6 fast! Thanks in advance for your comments!

Don't want to start a flame; but, most AVERAGE M3 drivers will be in the mid-14's. A decent/good M3 driver will be in the low 14's, around 14.1-14.2. A GOOD M3 driver will be in the 13.8-13.9 range. You really have to be ****-poor to be in the high 14's.
A good M3 driver vs. a good 350Z driver = A GREAT RACE!
That said, most people that drive M3's are not good drivers. Many of them are more into looking good. Heck, you know the posts, people claiming they killed a 350Z by 3-4 car lengths ... whatever .. b/c we know that's not true unless a one-armed monkey was driving the 350Z.
OR, if an E36 owner admits defeat .. they say, throw some "twisties or curves" in there. Yet, 90% of them have never been to a DE/FATT event. So, they have no idea of how the M3 can really shine on the track.
The 350Z is a great car ... looks nice and handles well. It's no E46 M3; but, then again, it wasn't designed to compete for E46 M3 buyers IMHO .
Yes, I am an e36 owner, I own two of them. But, not all BMW owners think their cars can beat everything on the road.
Just like, hopefully, not all 350Z owners think they can kill E36 BMW's.

The performance of the E36 is very similar to the 350. My instructor at my last track event has an E36 M3 and was very impressed with the Z. On the street, I have usually edged out the E36. They are great cars and solid track performers. The E46 is an entirely different animal. Do not provoke!
I really like the M3s (both E36/E46). Got much respect for both, but has anyone seen the Best Motoring video "Z Shock" ?
The Z beats the E46, S2000 (not by much) and the Boxster at th Sukuba (sp?) race course.
