Thumbs up Raced a '98 Z28 from a roll.

Last night I was leaving a cruise spot, a dark blue Z28 was next to me in the left lane on a straight open highway. We kept messin around, finally he rolled down the window and yelled on his third beep we go. He had a passanger, I was alone. I was in 4th gear at about 4500. I heard the third beep and punched it out, when we stopped I was in 6th at about 150. I got the jump and stayed in front the whole time, by 2-3 car lengths at the end. Being it was an open rode I put my flashers on and told him to pull up next to me, The first thing he asked was if my car was stock. I told him yeah and its got 1900 miles. He had an auto Z28 with an LS1, and all he put on it was an exhaust. His friend kept saying that cars fcukin quick. They both admired my ride, I told him he would take me from a stop, or even a slower roll on. He said we'll find out next week and laughed. It was a fun race and I'm glad my Z came out on top.

the autos def dont seem to be as quick as the m6's i think they are geared differenty. I usually have good races with the autos at the track in my gt,but the m6s pull pretty hard from the 1/8th on

Some more details please: What speed did you take off at? Are you sure it was a V8? Why would you think he'd take you from a slower roll

Somethings not kosher

What speed did you start from?

I hate to tell you guys but auto LS1s aren't that much slower from a roll than a M6 car.

I'd just like a few more details before i raise the BS flag or tell u nice kill.

I'm in the market for an LS1 so I test drove an auto (want an M6) last week. Getting onto the freeway at 50 or so...can't remember the exact speed, but anyways I punched it and it didn't downshift, and I found the acceleration was really bad if not embarassing. Later while exiting the freeway I punched it at 60 or so and it downshifted this time. I was very impressed, we were going 100 in no time with 3 people in the car and the T-Tops off. It honestly felt stronger or on par with my dad's 2001 Carrera 2 M6.

Yea, 60mph is a VERY strong downshift for the A4 cars.

In my (albeit limited) experience, the A4 with the 2.73 rear end does leave a little on the table vs. the M6 or 3.23 geared A4's. Since he said it was a '98 is more than possible since the 3.23 rear end didn't become standard in the A4's until the last few model years.

I'm not sure of the exact speed we were going before we took off, but I know I was at 4500 in 4th (more than 60), I told the guy that he will probably take me from a slower roll because I know the car will have a stronger downshift. From a dead stop, correct me if i'm wrong those cars should run a 13.8 to a 14.1, w/ an auto. I'll be sure though not to race them at 60, now that i know thats their strong point.

Not exactly....with a competent driver I have seen anywhere from 12.9-13.5 The Autos are no slower in the 1/4 mile than a M6 car.....the M6s will trap higher tho as they are playing catch up.

Easy low to mid 13s with a decent driver.

Maybe i'm missing somthing but the 2.73 was standard the entire time F-bodies were produced.....b/c even on the 02 SS and WS6 the 3.23 was a "required" option but not so on the standard model.

From a dead stop a A4 will hang very well with a M6 for a couple gears (or my experience has been).....3rd gear is when I start pulling good.

There's no way a stock '98 Z28 w/ an auto will run a 12.9, i'll give it the 13.5 with a real good driver, but how good do you have to be with an auto anyway. My girlfriends cousin has a '02 T/A conv't with an auto. I'm waiting to race him, our schedules are conflicting, but we'll meet up soon. Her uncle has a '00 Camaro SS, with a T-Top delete (not to many around, he says). He has a few bolt ons, and runs a 12.5 with street tires, we'll be at the track next week (LI Motorsports).

Nice kill.

Sounds right against A4 LS1 w/ passenger

4th at 4500 pulls hard on the Z.

Go to the LS1 forums and ask for 98SNAKEEATER .....you can tell him a 98 LS1 won't run a 12.9 all day long.....Just FYI i think he has a vid of him tooling a blue 03 Cobra from a stop several times.

Here in Waco, TX there are 2 A4 cars running 12.9 with only a lid.....one is a 00 Z28 the other a 01 WS6......and mine makes 3.

BTW there isn't a T-top delete......its a commonly ordered option.....with a few cars not having T-tops ordered.
Good day.

Good day.
I think he meant 12.9s stock, that would def take an alignment of the stars to happen(track prep, elevation, weather, little tailwind)

I also have first hand knowledge of an 02 a4 camaro with only a lid and bfg drs running 12.9s, with a 250 lb guy driving the cars are pretty bad ***. Except they like to fall apart , also first hand knowledge

45-55 SUCKS for an 3:23 geared LS1 auto...but watch out from 60 - 70!! 80 onward is ok but not spactacular...

i ran 13.43 with Lid/Exhaust/FRA(which i doubt helped out any...maybe .05 tentha).. 310RWHP/321RWTQ in 85-90 degree weather with same humidity! Give me 70 degree weather and let me do a good 10-15 second burnout and i bet i can see VERY low 13's with a good 60' (i got a 2.099 without heaten my nittos up)...i got the MPH there just need to launch it right...

So i would say that a stock 01-02 A4 could possibly do 13.4 on street tires due to the LS6 intake which yeilds them ~15 RWHP...but 12.9 stock...hmm...maybe if it was a factory freak!

Mine did 12.9 @ 110.1 with only a direct-flo airlid.
here's the slip http://home.hot.rr.com/ws6ta/Times/12.998@110.10.JPG

That was about 44 degree weather back in January.....
and i ran that time certainly not because of a great 60 ft..... 2.15 isn't great and the car was still bogging coming out of the hole.....that was on the STOCK F1s and only mod being the lid.
The killer trap speed is probably what helped pull me into the 12s.

The A4 cars i've seen pull the 12 stock have had killer 60 fts MUCH better than mine.

And just on another note Evan Smith ran a 98 M6 Z28 to 12.89 and a 01 SS to a 12.96 in 90 degree weather so with good driving its possible.

I guess my point is that 12.9 is possible on STREET tires.

They are lying when they say their car is stock, if they're running a 12.9 with a 4A, on street tires. You should check to see where they're hidding the NITROUS!!

i said it was a fat guy with a lid and bfgs ran a 12.9, so i def think that a stock street tired freak could do it, the f1s hook very good on a well prepped track and I have seen more than a handful of guys cut 1.8-1.9 60's on them....exactly what you would need for that 12.9x pass in the a4..stop hatin the car goes fast in a straight line
