James' N/A Street Legal Z33 A/T buildup
Hows it goin everyone? Make a long story short, my Z has been sitting in my racecar trailer for the last 4 years and is now finally getting a little TLC. I have a plan to take this car to the max on pump gas and the project has already started. Finished pulling the motor last week and have the heads down at a Mesquite, Texas speed shop (Speed Specialty w/ Gary Sr.) I am looking to make this car the highest HP N/A A/T true street legal 3.5L 350z out there. Have come across some pretty interesting numbers thus far but still cant find a for sure on what the record is...so if anyone knows hit me up. We started tearing apart the driveline just yesterday and my first focus is going to be on my driveshaft. Local Pro-Mod driver and good friend of the family Jeremy Brown has a guy that is looking into this as I type to find the best possible material/dimension combo possible so i'll post up what our findings are in the next few weeks. I originally wanted to go with a carbon shaft due to light nature and high tensile strength but he has said so far that its just a waste of money. He is trying to find a way to use alluminum but without the bulk of traditional sizing for alluminum race shafts. The real kicker for me is fuel management. I dont know anything about the current products on the market and i've read so many things from so many people about what they used that its overwhelming. Suggestions would be appreciated for a strict N/A buildup without having to go full stand alone. As things start to come together i'll be posting vids and pics of our findings and specs so I hope everyone enjoys following. Due to my brokeass budget this project should be finished sometime by february of next year or march at the latest so be patient. Thanks for the time and I cant wait to talk with some of you about new ideas.

SGGAsh have no clue...still reading...haha...those guys have tons of pages to flip through and my out of date computer machine here is too damn slow to do it efficiently...I wonder if there is even a category for a 5-speed...haha...who knows, I may already have this in the bag if thats the case.

i would suggest lots of testing of custom fabricated parts. most of the stuff you can just buy right off the market is not going to get you anywhere near what SG's car has, which if i recall is at 346 whp. they are definitely the first place i would go for information if i were doing a large build. they did a lot of testing on the plenum and exhaust of our cars that no one else is willing to give out so they are very educated as well. also Z1 seems like a nice guy and has a large build up too. good luck though getting the "highest" numbers in a years time. both z1 and sg or anyone who is constantly doing r&d are constantly doing work on their cars and i know sg is a good 2 years into their build.
also why are you replacing the driveshaft? that is probably the last thing i would worry about.

its a hard life in NA, and even worse for AT... drivetrain loss sucks.
I have full bolts ons and ported and polished plenum setup, only makin 246 (on a mustang dyno)
I put nismo cams in so I need to redyno to see what i'm making now... then a tune to seal it all up to hold me over until I finish my build (I'm swaping a revup in to my 5AT)

with maybe 1 exception I think pretty much anyone who built an NA setup is a 6 speed
do auto's come with the carbon driveshaft? for some reason I thought only manual trans Z's did. IIRC G's aren't carbon either (regardless of the transmission)
as for the best engine management, it really depends on
1. what the build will consist of
2. who is tuning it
3. your budget
a full standalone for this car in the legit sense of the word (your stock ecu being out of the loop) won't happen using the stock auto tranny...so you're looking at either some form of reflash (Uprev), or a piggyback unit (Haltech etc)
there is quite a bit involved swapping a revup to a non, I hope you know what you're in for - even the air conditioning is different. It's not a purely simply affair
I also wouldn't get too hung up on the final numbers, as everyone uses a different dyno, with a different calibration and setup, and as such the #'s differ. It's really about the net gains and how they fit into your goals

Have to be a 3.5?
I think Gabe3d made 350whp and 310+wtq on his 4.2 (on pump gas I believe).
I don't think SG made 346 on pump, but I can't say for sure. I want to say they run 100 or 104 in their race car.
As far as highest whp VQ on the site.............has to be the 3.8l in the fontana time attack car, but you couldn't run anything remotely that aggressive in a street car. I wouldn't be surprised if 50-60 grand was wrapped up in that motor.

-Apexi 80mm filter (ported to fit the below item)
-Z1auto 3" MAF
-Samco induction hose
-Cosworth Intake Plenum
-Rebello Custom Stage4 (not 100% sure what is involved but sounds like a 5 angle job and some porting/grinding and polishing, I'll get more information when he is done). He retains stock diameters on the valves and is able to outperform the m2race ones (4cfm less @ .500" 20cfm more @ .200"-.300" and 6 to 8CFM everywhere else). He is contemplating a 1mm over stock on the intake as well, but he has to model the engine to know if it is worth while.
-Supertech Single spring valvetrain
-Rebello custom grind camshafts, this would also be created based on the modeling.
-Cosworth 100mm head gasket
-BC 88mm crankshaft. Rebello actually had one in his warehouse.
-JE 100mm Pistons
-Manley Turbo Tuff connection rods
-Darton MID sleeves
-ACL Calico coated race bearings
-ARP main studs
-Nissan HR head studs
-Nissan Revup Oil pump
-Tomei V2 Headers (he'll see if these are good enough for my car, i really hope so)
-Ichiba Test Pipes
-Motordyne XYZ pipe
-Fluiamp Dampener
-Unorthodox Flywheel
-Balancing of short block with pulley and flywheel
-Blueprinting of long block
-Walbro 195LPH Fuel Pump and/or bigger injectors
-Port match and polish on the parts from the air filter to the intake collector to match the cylinder heads, including the throttle body.
-Tuning wise, I'm going to stay with Osiris flashing and get it tuned for 91, 100 and possibly E85.

Ok... and if you were staying current... as of 8/18/2010:

I mentioned them because that's what he said he was going to do, but doesn't appear to have done it yet. No new dynos.
