Default K+N Filter warning!!!

I don't know if this is true or not but I have read on other websites that K+N Filters have an effect on Mass air flow sensors. When I went to the schucks kragen last night and told them I wanted a new air filter, He offered me a K+N filter. I told him I bought that filter less than a year ago and it may be why I just had to replace an exhaust manifold and Mass Air Flow sensor at the cost of up to 800 dollars. My total cost to repair the problem was $640.00. He then told me had I bought the K+N eliminator kit this wouldn't have happened! That kit supposedly has its own ducting and sensor included from what I understood. Now I'm considering taking the filter out of my GTI also and getting my money back.
I don't know if anyone else has run into this. It may just be hearsay that the oils from the filter get onto the mass airflow sensor and dull its performance. I did clean it with the CRC Mass airflow sensor cleaner and it made the car run better but It still did not run right. When I installed the new mass sensor it made the car run 100 % almost seems better. Will See how it goes.
I won't be putting K N in my Nismo..

I agree- I used a K& N filter on my Cummins motor and you should have seen my intercooler. It didn't matter how little oil I sprayed on the filter it still pulled through. I live in a dusty area in the country and a Delco OEM filter would show restrictions on the filter minder in a 6 month period. The K& N over a 5 year period never showed any restrictions. My logic tells me that anytime you let more air in you are sacrificing good filtration. Maybe on the track or in clean environments this may not be an issue, but I will never use an oil filter again.

Any other thoughts on this??

Ive run oiled filters on many MAF'd vehicles and never had a problem. I would agree though if **** and oil got up the tube, it would kill the maf

+1, 13 years here. most people who have had problems were the noobs who over oiled the filter after cleaning them.

It seems obvious to me that from the factory, it should be fine. Its very easy to over oil when cleaning and re-oiling. kinda makes me not want to clean an re-oil... maybe just re-buy

the oil is what catches the debris. the filter without oil is basically useless for filtering small particles.

i had this problem before with my IS300. BUT luckily someone told me to just locate and clean the MAF sensor with a electronics cleaner. I did and it worked like a charm. Car ran better than before because i didn't realize how dirty my MAF sensor was with dirt, oil etc.

Saved myself a pretty penny.

If you have access to compressed air, then you can blow the excess oil off.

just get the AEM dryflow filters. They are reusable like the K&N minus the oil.
