Default Bought an 08 Z a few days ago..Break-In Method?

Hi guys. Quick question, what break in method did you or are you currently using on your new Z's? I searched but came up unsuccessful. Thanks for any help!

There is a whole section in your owners manual about it, from memory it's 1200miles and yeh no rev's past 4000rpm ^, no sudden acceleration, no sudden breaking, no long trips and something else that I can't remember off the top of my head... Get it over and done with as quick as you can

There have been a couple "break-in" method threads. Some had a lot of debate. I tend to go with what the designers of the engine recommend...it's in the manual.
Congratulations at last.

may i ask what a "Long Trip" actually is? i am anticipating going to the dealership and picking up my new 350Z this week, and will have about a 4 and 1/2 hour drive home.

is that a long trip? and if so, what do you guys recommend? taking a 30 minute break at about the halfway point?

also, another quick question. nothing over 4,000 rpms, right? about how fast would a 350Z be going at 4,000 rpms?

Mike

In 6th gear you can easily go 80 with some room while keeping it below 4,000.

With reference to long trips: I think the concern is that you do not drive the Z for extended periods of time at one speed to insure uniform wear on engine parts. This is particularly important on the pistons and rings where uneven wear can lead to major oil consumption problems. When I was breaking the Z in I'd try to vary the car speed up or down 5 or 10 mph every 15 or 20 minutes if I was driving on a long trip. Its a hassle to be careful for the first 1200 miles but Nissan recommends it and I suspect they have their reasons for doing so.

I forgot to congratulate you on getting the Z. It's a great car. Treat it well and it will return the favor many times over.

just make sure to vary your speeds on that drive.
personally, i would need a break some time during that 4.5 hour drive just to stretch and grab something to eat.
if it is manual, i believe 80mph is just around 3000 rpm in 6th gear.

this is an automatic transmission. just wondering what an auto would be doing at 4,000 rpm? assume pretty close.

and yep, i am sure i would need at least one break on that 4.5 hour long trip home, probably even two breaks with the new 350Z.

so, its my understanding the Break In period rules are as follows:
1) 1,200 miles is the norm
2) no more than 4,000 rpm the first 1,200
3) no quick acceleration or stopping
4) vary speeds
5) no long trips without stopping every couple of hours or so.

Mike

Hi, I'm new to this site....everthing350z is toast. Anyway, I'm not a no-it-all by any means, but just wanted to say that I say the piece on the GTR, which I realize is a different car, and I realize there's a lot of controvesy, but do you know that they take the new GRT's and hit the track brand new and redline them around the track with the brakes on? They believe that this seats the brakes in and seem to not worry about driving it like you stole it as mentioned above.....

drive it the way you want to. just dont be hard on the tranny. just use a lot of engine breaking instead of normal brakeing. Let the engine slow you down for a while untill you break in the tranny ect. ha i feel like im jumping around. After about 500 miles drive it hard and hard and harder. just dont get caught by the coppers
