Default Just bought: '06 Silver Grand Touring, 21k miles

I'll pick it up tomorrow. Test drove it today and agreed on a price with the owner. Nice guy, selling the car because he is getting married to a woman with kids. He bought it last year used when he got back from Iraq (National Guard). He also happens to be a cop and very nice young man (if 30 years is young). the owner before him was a woman who drove it for 12,000 miles and traded it in. It was bought, serviced, and traded in locally.

The car is clean, has LoJack installed, 3M clear bra, and window tint. Two of the wheels are slightly curbed and it is missing the Nissan badge from the rear hatch. Besides the normal stuff included in the GT trim, the only extra that it has is side airbags.

It has a bunch of highway bugs on it now, but when I get it and can wash it, I'll post some pictures. but for now, I'll post the pictures of the car that I sold a couple weeks ago to buy this one.

I feel true pain whenever I remember how it felt to drive the Rex. It was awesome. However, the third gen RX-7, or "FD", is an expensive car to own. Many think that they are called "FD"s because of the FD in the VIN. Actually, FD is short for "Financial Disaster".

The real problem with the FD was not enough headroom for me. It was tough to have my head hit the roof just in regular driving, but with a helmet, it was impossible. I got $15k for the FD. I sold it cheap rather than waiting for 4-6 months to find the right buyer. I've also got another $2k in parts that I'm selling off.

I am buying the Z for $20K. Not a bad price, not a great price, but a price that both I and seller are happy with. Frankly, if it wasn't September, I think the seller would have done better trading it in than selling it to me for $20k. However, I'm happy he did.

It didn't always look that good. This is what it looked like after I bought it and got caught in a blizzard in NM on the way home.

Only reason I say that is cause I know the car isn't driving here, it's a rotary and it has blown apex seals, so seems funny to see it tilted like that as if it's moving like a real car...

No really! The car is moving pretty fast.

Of course what you don't see is the 6 guys just out of the frame that gave it the big push.

I like your RX-7. Got a question. How do you compare it to your new Z as far as realiablity, speed, and handling? I always wanted an RX-7TT but I heard that the seals blow on the motor if you run a little boost. Is this true? Thats why when I had the money at the time I went with a 91 300ZXTT. BTW you have any pics of you new Z? 06 Silver GT sounds really nice. Congrats

There really is no comparison between the Z and the Rex. Keep in mind that I have only driven the Z for a few days and haven't had a chance to auto-x it yet.

The RX-7 is a dedicated sports car. It is lighter, faster, and handles better. The power to weight ratio of the RX-7 is, I believe, very slightly better than the 350z at least stock. With just bolt-ons, the stock 225 hp can jump pretty dramatically to just under 300hp. There are few stock RX-7s left around anymore.

I like the way the Z drives, but it just doesn't give you that visceral thrill than the RX-7 does. OTOH, I sold the RX-7 because it didn't have enough headroom and makes a lousy DD. I didn't need a daily driver, but I was tired of hitting my head on the roof everytime I went over a bump. I also have gotten hugely busy in my life with business and family and don't have the time to spend working on the RX-7. They are maintenance intensive and repairs are expensive. The Z is going to be much more reliable and, compared to the RX-7, much cheaper.

The Z has a more comfortable ride, is quieter, and easier to get in an out of.

The RX-7 looks amazing. The Z looks, well, a bit pedestrian by comparison.

I took a 3000 mile 3 day road trip in the RX-7 and loved every minute of it. In the Z the same trip would be nice, and definitely more comfortable, but not as exhilarating.

If I was to pick a car to get in and drive through the mountain twisties, it would be the RX-7. To jump in a car to get to work; the Z.

The Z is a consumer's sports car, not a driver's sports car. The 3rd Gen RX-7 was designed as a true driver's car but was only sold in the States and Canada from 93-95, and very few 1995's were sold. The RX-7 while arguably a better true performance car than the Z, was a not as successful in the marketplace as the Z. There are a lot of Zs on the road, very few RX-7s. The 350z was so successful that we will see the 370 soon. The RX-7 wasn't, so what we saw in 2003 was the RX-8, not a true sports car but an interesting hybrid designed to do what the RX-7 failed to do which was capture a large enough market share to survive.

The RX-7 is known for being unreliable and blowing engines. If you own one, you need to keep enough money in the bank to be able to rebuild the engine at any time. OTOH, if you keep the engine relatively stock, only do the "reliability mods", and stay on top of maintenance, then the car will run fine for years. I never had any major engine problems but I kept my mods relatively conservative. The problem comes when you try to push the motor and turbos beyond what they were designed for. It is very tempting however. The other issue is that many FD owners are frankly young kids who buy the cars because the initial price of admission is pretty low for a high-performance car. They lack the financial resources and maturity to keep the car running well and they, more than the car itself, is why it gets the rep for being unreliable.
