Default thinking of getting a 350z conv

good morning to all,
my son recently got into a accident and they totalled his 2006 charger. he wants the 350z conv. nice car. due to his refund and budget we are getting a used car maybe in the 2004 to 2007. many have 75k to 100k miles. a few questions:

what should i look out for on a conv?
will a car this "old" and this many miles be worth the $10 to $15?
any and all advice is greatly appreciated

paul

I have 2 nissans one with 130,000 miles and my Z which I just bought has 78,000.. IMO its definitely "worth" it in monetary terms, they are good cars that hold up over time. I havent met many people who complain about their nissan breaking down all the time.
My only concern is how well your son can drive a sports car. If you drive dangerously then a Z most likely is not a good car to own

That was my concern as well. If he couldn't handle a boat like the Charger, the same power (atleast as the SXT) in a lighter and more nimble car would not be a good fit.

Depending on your son's age, I would stick to something like a Hyundai Tiburon V6. I had a 2005 model for 3 years and 63,000 miles. No complaints, and it was a great little sporty coupe (nothing like the Z though).

Like the other members are questioning, I would steer clear of a car like the Z if it's going to cause more trouble. There's loads of information on this forum.

If your son is a "teenager",getting a Z is not a good idea.
By what you are saying...making decisions for him,he sounds like he is
a teen or,not independent...on his own.
The reliabilty is not the issue.A Z can be bulletproof given common sense
upkeep.
Your son made it through his first wreck alive.
Count your blessings.

Another thing to recognize about a Z.Guys like us,mess with e'm after we buy e'm.With a a Charger...who screws with that kinda car?
Your son will get the bug.Maybe not as soon as he gets a Z,but It'll happen.
How to make it faster, handle better, sound better, look better.
The list is endless to the addicted when you join the Z brotherhood.
Besides all the stuff I mentioned, the drain on the pocketbook can be
awful...but in the end, rewarding to a real gearhead.

If you want to let your son get a car at the age of 19 that has the highest death rate, be my guest. I would try my best to talk my kid out of one.

http://www.thecarconnection.com/news...st-death-rates

A key point you should focus on:
For the Nissan Z, for example, its high rate was mostly due to an especially high instance of single-vehicle crashes—a reckless-driving situation in which the vehicle leaves the roadway to hit a tree or barrier.

Hi Paul, my 04 Roadster is just coming on to its ninth birthday and I drive it daily. For me this has been an easy car to live with and has stayed tight and squeak/rattle free. My total repair costs over all these years has been one inexpensive little light bulb. My location up here in Canada is easy on the top fabric as we lack the unrelenting hot sun/uv rays of southern California, so my original top is still in good condition. Replacement tops are available from many sources in different types of fabric and run from about $400 to $700. There are some excellent how-to guides complete with pictures on this site for installing one, if you are a DIYer. If in doubt, try to arrange for your test ride to go past an auto upholstery shop. It will only take a minute for the tech to advise on the top condition.

One consideration when choosing a convertible is the amount of wind buffeting present in the passenger compartment with the top down. The Z has excellent aerodynamics in this regard and is reasonably calm at speed. A lot of other sports cars quickly turn my perfectly quaffed hair into a rat’s nest. Your son’s girl friend will appreciate this immensely.

Every father wishes a happy and successful life for his son. It’s a well-confirmed fact in the Z world that the roadster people are a cut above the coupe people. They’re smarter, better mannered and receive more accolades and success in their careers. With the ownership of a convertible Z your son joins this rarified group, a definite leg-up in life. Providing this research and guidance for you son puts you in the running for a father of the year award. Well done.

Roadsters are for women. The post above proves it.
