Default Single Best/Less Expensive Aftermarket HP Mod?

Guys,

I've read allot on MY350z forum about what people are doing to boost HP on the "stock" Z's, but being that the Nismo has a few mods already (i.e., exhaust), what do feel would be the single best, and least expensive, aftermarket mod that would increase HP the most?

Some of the "stock" Z's that I have read about have increased HP by adding the Motordyne 5/16 plenum, do you feel this would be a good start?

Any opinion will be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you start your quest in the VQ35HR specific forum.

Also, the new HR series VQ motor has no need for a plenum spacer.

fyi the exhaust on the Nismo is just mufflers with welded tips that say Nismo. There isn't really any HP gains from having a Nismo. It makes it sound a little different.

You could do intake/exhaust which is probably the most typical mod that I think people do. If you didn't want to do a full intake you could just replace the filters.

good luck man.

For free: knowledge, you need to read up some more. You obviously have read nothing on my350z or you would have known HR's have a 1 piece composite plenum and cant accept a spacer.

If you want to spend money. Test pipes.

Crawford Cats hands down. No other Mod will produce the same amount of HP for the price!

are you looking for the cheapest mod $ wise, or the cheapest hp/dollar? 2 different things, that really should be clarified

0jiggy0,

Yeah, unfortunately I completely missed that the plenum was a single piece configuration on the HR's. See, you taught me something today, thnx!

Z1,

I'm looking to gain the most HP for the least amount of money. So far it appears that installing a CAI and some type of exhaust mod is winning. But it seem like I read in one thread months ago where someone dyno'd the Z with the stock intakes, then added an after market intake, and the stock's performed better , did anyone else see that thread?

What about tweeking ignition timing curves? Has anyone tried this?

Thnx guys for you input.

tweaking ignition curves? Leave them alone

intake - there are many intakes on the market. Some better than others.

test pipes would be the single biggest hp producing mod for the least amount of money

So far, all I've added is a Nismo dual CAI.
I don't know if it really added anything other than sound.

Sound and looks alone made it worth it for me, ofcourse I can't hear it anymore with my JIC exhaust.

As far as test pipes are concerned, you're right, they are cheaper then HFC's, I stand corrected.

Their right about the Test Pipes... The problem with them (because I have them on my mine), they are raspy in the lower RPM's, and it gets really annoying. If you can deal with it than go for it... But personally, I hate them. And for the HP gains, I didnt notice a diffence... My advice to you.. DO MORE research, save your money and buy something better like HFC or exhaust or even Nitrous.... Nitrous will be the bestest bang for the buck............

I have Stillen HFC and HKS exhaust. I had the exhaust first then put the HFC in a month later. I noticed a difference after i put them in, everything was great. Until i kept throwing the cel light (really annoying) and it also runs in safe mode making the mod pointless and somewhat hurtful on hp. My buddy owns an exhaust shop, which ended saving me. He also has an STI with down pipe and exhaust, i too used to have an STI with the same mods and kept throwing the cel light with the down pipe. On his STI the injen down-pipe comes with an extension for the o2 sensor and its also angled back away from the exhaust flow, which is key and why the spark plug spacers dont work. He built two angled extensions for the o2 sensors never tripped the CEL light again. Im going to post some pictures this afternoon when i get home. Came out really nice and any exhaust shop is capable of doing it. Ill write the exact dimensions of the pipe and they length my friend used.
