Thats no excuse...........

When i was away in college, not home town college......
I use to change my own oil in one of the schools parking lot..........peeps would walk buy and ask, "your car break down??".....LOL....

and, when i had major mods, i would go to a local mom and pop tire shop and rent out a bay with a lift!........usually for $40 bucks and hour and do mods myself........and they would let me use their tools.....most tire shops have lifts, and don't use them..........a service station or mechanic.... sure, but tire shop nope....

Also, i was an engineering major........so i would pull my truck into the engineer labs via the back roll up garage door....had access to lathes, mills, press, etc.....read your handbook - paying lab fees gets you more access to the lab than just "during class"..........LOL...most dont know this!

"There are ways" but in the end, you yourself knowing things are done right is key...........that or watch them do it in the service bay and ensure its done right!!!

Update:

Nissan paid for a tow truck and a rental car. They are also going to clean my garage, which has about a quart of oil on it.

They just called and said the bottom of the car is soaked in oil (no surprise), and they are going to do a fresh oil change and go from there.

I have a feeling Nissan is going to say the engine is ok because is such a giant expense. Where should I go to get a second opinion?

Jason I hear you but you do not know my mother. The lady is damn near crazy. Plus I don't know how to use a lift, or feel like renting out a bay and doing all that. Not to mention I have 0 tools. So in the end it would end up costing me just as much.

And on top of that, if I did something stupid like forgetting to put the drain plug back in I would really be screwed. I'm happy that I brought it to Nissan because they are liable for shotty work.

**** happens, this could have just as well been me not putting a plug in all the way or whatever, but it wasn't thank goodness.

as soon as you get the car back. Tell them ur engine is still making funny sounds. I would make them replace my motor. Take the car from Nissan drive it around the block then head back to the dealership and tell them its still fudged.

Whatever happens happens. I guess the good news is that if I lost a quart of oil in my garage it means that I had some oil running through my engine while I was driving it. (I did have no pressure though)

I told them it was making a clicking sound, and I was very concerned about the motor being damaged. If they say it is fine I will politely tell them that I am going to get a second opinion.

At this point they should have no problem with that since they just said it was fine. If I get the second opinion and they say the engines toast then I go back to Nissan with the report and we sort it out from there.

But do any of you have suggestions of where I should get my second opinion from?

Lol to put everything in perspective, at least this is just a car. I can't imagine the stress people have to go through when fighting about health care coverage with their insurance company when their life is on the line.

I'll keep you guys updated...

From when the clicking burning started about 10 miles plus a lot of traffic. Like I said, when I was in traffic I thought it was one of the dozen crap boxes around me.

If I had no pressure does that mean even though I had oil it wasn't lubricating the engine?

Its been about 4 hours since I brought the car in and I haven't heard anything from Nissan, other than them telling me the bottom of the car is soaked in oil and they asked how much oil was on my garage floor.

Update:

Nissan just called and said they replaced the oil and everything is running fine. A seal blew or something like Jason said.

They said the Nismo's oil tank is in a weird place compared to other Z's and that because of the location I was probably getting a clicking sound from the pump running dry.

Because oil spewed all over my car I asked them if I could get it detailed and they said they would take care of it. I hope they don't swirl the hell out of it.

I'm heading up in about an hour to pick it up and hopefully everything will be ok.

They are going to give me $250 for the clean up of my garage and driveway

There is nothing different about the nismo oil setup.

If your engine ran dry for even a second and it was their fault I'd be pressing for waaay more than a detail job by some 17 year old porter. At a minimum id be making them do a compression and leak down test, and getting it in writing what exactly happened, and that it was their fault.

My thoughts as well....get as much as you can documented...you don't want it to bite you in the *** later.

what nissan dealer is it? I know you're around Boston, so i could take a few guesses. it sounds like they're actually stepping up, which is good to hear.

and i'm on your side...I don't bother to change my own oil. I have a trusted mechanic do it, and it's worth the extra $20 to me.

It's Nissan Kelly of Lynnfield up on Route 1 North

My plan of action is to take the car for a hard test drive with the service manager in the passanger seat.

since I will be on the highway I will run the car to redline through 1st and 2nd gear which will put me at about 70 mph.

If there is nothing unusual going on and the car seems to be running fine I will just take it as is.

I think its a good idea like some of you said to get this whole thing in writing just incase a few weeks go by and the engine blows or something.

My biggest concern (not knowing much about cars) is that when the engine gets hot with little lubrication there is a chance that specks of hot metal got shaved off in the cylinders and could damage the engine and its components if they cut/strike something, like an O ring.

I'm sorry, I can't watch them either lie to you like that or just be that ignorant. That is the biggest load of BS I've ever heard. The "oil tank" is in a weird place on the Nismo?!? Really?

And regardless of that, if the reason they said you were hearing weird noises is because your pump ran dry, you probably did serious damage considering how long you were running the car while it was making noise.

I would get everything in writing. Good luck.

Glad to hear you made some progress, you're definitely covered under warranty for any damage caused.

The Result:

Just got the car back and everything seems to be fine. Granted the engine doesn't blow up on me next week Kelly Nissan of Lynnfield gets an A+.

The paid for a tow truck, gave me a rental car, gave me $250 to clean my garage. and fully detailed my car inside and out. They fully admitted it was their mistake and were very nice to me.

They said the problem was the filter seal (I beleive) was pushed off to the side which was causing the oil to leak though. (possibly an overtightened filter or something else) The plug was still in the oil pan.

I got in the car with the service manager and ran through first and second gear completely and didn't hear any strange noises comming from the engine.

I will be bringing my car back to Kelly Nissan for service. It's nice to see a dealership stand behind their service.

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions as well guys.

Congrats. A similar thing happened to my Audi A6..oil cooler seal failed..spewing oil everywhere under the car..esp. up hill. Smoking like
crazy hehe and making an awful noise. I nursed the car to my mechanic about 20miles. He replaced the seal changed the oil and all was good

:-)..
Don't even think twice .. your car is fine.

^Thx for your bouts of confidence. It makes me feel much better that someone else has gone through a situation like this and everything worked out fine.

The engine felt good and pulled strong when I put it through the paces. I am very happy the way everything worked out. Plus the free detail is huge. My car looks great.

They said they used an orbital buffer and some kind of "Black Magic" something or other which eliminates swirl marks.

I would've had this done before anything. For some reason, even though the dealer took some action, I see the long term end result not being good.
