Unhappy My Poor Baby :(

I took my Nismo in for an oil change at the dealership this morning. All seemed to have gone well. I brought 5 quarts of Mobil One and a filter, got it changed and drove off.

So tonight I am driving home from spending the day in Boston and I am hearing this "clicking" sound, and smelling burning.

I didn't think much of it since I was in traffic and figured it was another car. When I got to my street I noticed the "clicking" getting louder and the smell getting worse. So I pulled over and shut off the car.

I didn't see anything at first but then when I got on the ground I saw smoke comming out from under my car!

I was about half a mile from my house so decided it was best to get it home. I turned the car back on and all of a sudden the oil pressure guague was reading almost 0 and when I pulled in my driveway a few minutes later the "low oil light came on"

As I pulled into the driveway I noticed a pool of oil from where my car was parked earlier in the day.

I think Nissan forgot to plug the oil pan or whatever it is when they changed my oil. Now my car was clicking which I assume is the engine seizing from lack of oil and smoking.

I called Nissan right away but they were closed. I left a message and told them the situation and that I needed a tow truck and to call me back as soon as possible.

I'm just fuming with rage right now and I don't know what to do. I really got on my car today to because I figured I had fresh oil and was rev happy. Now I think I may have severly damaged the engine because that clicking sound.

What should I do? Will Nissan cover this? Should I ask them to inspect and possibly replace my engine?

I am sick to my stomach right now.

Well, at least is is a dealer and not Joe Greasemonkey. That really sucks man. First thing I would do is contact the Service Manager and keep moving up the line until you get results.

Chances are there's some serious damage if you could HEAR it....

My only concern would be bringing your own oil. I know some places here you have to sign a sort of waiver if you don't use their parts.

hopefully everything works out for you.

^This shouldn't be an issue. I have been bringing my own oil since day one. This dealership has changed my oil about 7 times. I always just leave the oil 5W-30 synthetic on the seat and have had no issues.

I am really nervous I might need a new engine because the clicking was pretty pronounced as I got it to my driveway. The weird thing is, is that the oil pressure guage was reading fine until I pulled over and shut off the car. The "low oil" light didn't come on until I literally pulled into my driveway.

How am I going to know if I need a new engine. Can I trust them to look at at and say "yes" I am assume they are going to say "you'll be fine" because its going to look pretty bad for them to have to order a whole new engine from Nissan HQ because they forgot to plug the oil.

This really sucks. I remember a few years ago I took my first car to Wal-Mart to get an oil change. I drove home and noticed some smoking, when I parked I popped the hood and saw that they forget to put the oil cap on. Oil was all over the hood and engine, and I was pissed. I called them and told them and their attitude was really nonchalant and sort of "and? What's the problem? Bring it back and we will top it off for you." I was so pissed and nobody there cared. After that I learned to change my own oil.

No telling what happened. No oil pan plug means that it is impossible to fill the motor with oil - the oil just comes out the bottom of the pan.

What was the time period between leaving the dealer and first noticing a problem?

Sorry to hear bout your situation Lento, but here's a remedy to the situation.....change the oil yourself... You buy the oil might as well put it in yourself too!!

ANY service work at my dealership is covered for 12 months no matter what.
They will definitely cover something like this, whether they know it or not. Easy way or hard way, this is fully their screw-up and are fully responsible to make it right.
Don't buy into any bs line about "Oh, there's not likely to be any damage".

This is why you eliminate dealer interaction with your car as much as possible. And for something as simple as changing your oil, this is quite silly.

Best of luck. I hope things get resolved without any resistance or confrontation from the dealership.

Sorry to hear.

Even if you do get a new motor, your car's resale value gets dinged. The next buyer won't like to hear that the engine got replaced no matter the reason.

^Now that you say this I remember hearing a "ping ping ping" at one point on the highway. Maybe the drain plug was in but not secure and popped out.

I got the oil changed at 9:30 this morning and everything seemed fine until I drove home about 8. So I would think the drain plug must have been somewhat in there otherwize all my oil would have been drained out by then.

I called the Nissan towing company TJ Towing or something and they said they would send me a flat bed and drive it up with me this morning. Now I have to push this thing out of my garage. I'll keep you guys posted on what happens.

BTW I completely agree with changing your own oil, but I'm still in college and live at home and my mother is paranoid about the oil getting all over the place and its worth the 20 bucks for me not to have to listen to her every time I do it.

Plus when I bring my own oil and filter which is $30 Nissan only charges me $17 for labor.

The first time I went I didn't bring anything and they charged me $80 for a synthetic oil change.

So by bringing my own stuff I save $30 compared to using their products. And I know Mobil One is a good oil.

How does this always happen at dealerships? WTF do they only hire retards?
Time to start getting under there and tightening the drain plug yourself. Also mobil 1 is crap oil now.

Here is your problem!! Wal-Mart

Why on Gods green earth would you take your 350z to Wal-Mart!!

I would not even park my car in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

HOw about..........

you jack your car up, and look to see if you have a drain plug??

but my guess is that when they swapped the oil filter........the old rubber oil filter ring stayed stuck to the car and when they put on the new oil filter they didn't notice.......

I HAVE SEEN THIS HAPPEN!

thats why you were able to drive and didn't loose all your oil all at once and your gauge was slow at noticing..........more than likely thats what happened....

its worth your time to do so........if you find the issue, before they do, take pictures and arm yourself with data!....

if you dont have time or a jack to jack the car up and look, slip the tow truck company driver 20 bucks and ask him to do it, they usually carry a jack with them....

if not, dont let your car out of your site at the dealership.......take pics!

the dealership isnt gonna be so "WILLING" to get you a new engine...pfffff!
