Unless you are looking from it from the insurance side of things and then it makes sense. But a salvage car is not totaled in the sense that it can never be repaired.

Must be a state-to-state thing. In NJ, if a car is totaled but re-purchased from the insurance company, it comes with a salvage title. If you fix it, it's still a salvage title. I believe the same is true here in CA, though I haven't totaled any cars in this state.
