Damn, I'd love to build an RB or SR 240SX, also a 2JZ Supra.

 

So my sis picked up my wheels and I should have em some time this evening :-D. I just can't wait to drive the car again. I've got to finish putting my interior back together now before I get the tires mounted and balanced.

 

Yea I know that, but so can the VQ. BTW the RB26 weighs more than a VQ. Personally i'd opt. for the 2JZ, parts are more readily available and cheaper.

the VQ cannot "easily" hold that much power. It takes a good amount of money to get a solid, reliable 500-600hp build in a VQ from what I've seen. 600hp on a 2jz or RB26 is easily obtainable with the stock internals not being stressed.

A DE's rods crumble at the 400hp mark.
The HR has so far been proven to hold 500hp, but durability is not known yet.

I'm refering to a built VQ, using a stock block is a different story.

 

I consider an RB swap to be like a guy that was on pass time. He converted his fuel injected LS Camaro/firebird/transam/whatever to a carburated setup.... when asked why, basically said to be different.

IMHO different isn't always better. I just see a swap like this as a step in the wrong direction... weight differences, powerband. Not to mention the potential ECU issues. All the custom fabrication. I am one that believes custom fabrication = garbage. Of course their are exceptions, but in general garbage.

Your money, your time, your car. I consider it a waste of time and effort more so than money. I see you taking out a motor with more to offer than the one going in.

 

if one is going to do any sort of swap, I would think they would be going through whatever motor they are putting in. At that point, you would be going through your VQ if you were keeping it and adding boost.

A lot of talk about HP levels, and much of it without much, if any experience with it in a Z. I can tell you, in a Z/G setup, 400-500 is PLENTY... unless of course you are going track specific. IMHO 400-450 is really the sweet spot for our cars on the street. What I am getting at, you don't have to go too in depth to get to 450.... or even 500 for that matter. Why do a swap to get to those power levels; if that is your goal? Going into the 600's and beyond is a completely new ball game. I cannot imagine what you do with that much power. For any street driving it would be completely useless. And on the track, you are going to eat up transmissions and axels if made a legitimate attempt at putting it to the ground.... again, making it uselss.

Everyone is free to do as they please, but the two guys that got it right around MN are Blake and Cory... stock blocks, quality turbo conversions, low to moderate boost levels, good tune. Car is still fun, but not as finicky as a full build.... I don't regret what I have done to my car. I feel I have it pretty dialed in now and running really well, but it is nothing more than a demonstration of my obsessive compulsive tendancies. Completely overkill.

In MN it's 50% all around for cars.

SUVs and Trucks can legally have 50% on the fronts and anything on the rears.

 

Really? I thought it was 35% in MN. I've thought about tinting the Z, but it sounds like harassment reigns supreme.

It seems they are getting a bit tighter on the tint laws. I just had my fit done and my tint guy says he is getting calls from people getting pulled over for tint. He says until recently he had almost zero calls.

I usually run 35 on my cars, on the fit, I went with 35 on the rears and 42 up front upon the recommendation of my tinter. I have 35 on my Z and 30 on my Xterra. I personally have never had an issue with harrassment about my tint. Been pulled over for other reasons in a tinted car and not had any comments about my tint. As long as you aren't blacked out, you will be fine.

IMHO a tint job is as essential to a car as changing the oil. The function of it is my reasoning, the fact that it improves the look of the car as well is just icing

I have 35% on my front windows and 20% on the rear windows. I haven't gotten pulled over for it yet (knock on wood).


Dave, tint those windows! You'll be surprised how much it sets a car off.

 

I'm a bit conservative and would rather not have the hassle of getting pulled over. I have 35% tint and haven't had any issues in terms of getting pulled over for a year now. Any more than 35% and things get a more risky (50% and 35% are very close in terms of looks...with enough of an edge IMO to look better asthetically).

I sell to the goverment (the Public Safety Market in particular) and what officers have told me is if you aren't doing anything stupid you shouldn't have anything to worry about except for the State Patrol. For them, their main source of income is thru ticketing. But even then...usually they won't bother you unless they are "fishing" (profiling) or having a bad day.

PS - the price went up by a couple hundred since they had to do some extra work preping the bumper after our joy ride a little bit to close together last weekend .
