This whole spacer thing drives me nuts. Some say use it, it's ok. Some say don't. What the heck???? Don't want to buy new wheels anytime soon, but I could use a spacer for the front.

What's the consensus on having spacers and driving the car hard?

It's fine. Just buy the right ones, whichever style you go with, from a reputable company, and install them properly. You'll be just fine.

It will add a little more stress to the wheel bearings and you might have to replace them sooner then you would otherwise, but if they are installed properly they will be absolutely OK.
